"How do you pronounce that word?
I pronounce it cleek
And I’ve only just realised that’s probably wrong"
Correct, one could draw a comparison with 'oblique' |

I’m pretty sure you’re right. I was joking because it’s mentioned so often "

It's cleek. Unfortunately, so many Brits now get their education from US sitcoms etc. that many of them pronounce it click.
However, the "correct" pronunciation - if that means anything - is cleek. |

It's definitely pronounced Kleek. It comes from an old French word cliquer.
So you are saying it correctly |

"It's 'cleek' in British English I'm fairly sure, US English it's 'click'."
No, I’m fairly certain it’ll be the same over there. It’s the French for latch, so everyone tends to mimic the pronunciation of its origin. |

Most Americans I know say it as click. In fairness they do pronounce La Croix as lacroy, so I'm not so sure they consider etymology. |

I don’t know why some of you have such a hang up about the ‘Clique’ since it’s non existent.
Besides, half the people assumed to be in it have gone to ground due to the current content amongst forum threads! |

I just wanted to know if I was pronouncing it correctly, someone in our group chat mentioned a clicky clique, and it dawned on me that maybe, just maybe, I was saying it wrong for my whole 23 years |

If it was pronounced ‘click’ it would be spelt that way.
‘Clique’ is from the French - to make a noise. This is old French, as ‘noisy’ is now ‘bruyant’.
The word should be ‘claque’ which means ‘a group of sycophantic followers’.
Seems about right to me with some on here.

"Click. How it should be
Do you think so?
Yes, I pronounce it the American way
[Removed by clique for pulling bemused face at those who say click . at 24/04/20 20:53:07]"
That’s twice the joke has fallen flat |

They’re self-isolating.
Together.
Because they’re in the ‘cleek’ |

It's pronounced juvenile adults generally found on fabswingers who desperately seek attention and popularity and will do anything to get it.
Here's a hint, you'll find some in the 'Ireland' forum |
