There’s tons! I am veggie/ pre-gan as I’ve been told but I mostly eat vegan meals anyway. Have a look for YouTube tutorials on your favourite cuisine. For example, I follow original flava because I wanted some West Indian recipes.

NB: They’re not ALL vegan or veggie

great decision!

check your supplements.. iron, b12 - most of europe/america is low in b's, but it's extra important to watch these as a vegan.

+ eat more, get your proteins, cronometer's a half decent tracker if you have concerns

Hi O.P.

I am vegan.

One thing I will warn you against is pre prepared vegan meals in supermarkets.

Most of them are just fat , salt , sugar etc....

I use some of them but check out the nutrition first.

Don't follow vegan fads or vegan faddy foods.

Just remember that everything without meat, fish , eggs or dairy in is VEGAN.

It's very easy.

To make sure you get your protein quota eat lentils, beans etc.....

I make my own seitan tho I get fed up making it and I do like some vegan sausage and soy mince.

Don't make it a labour. Just eat tons of veg with some vegan proteins and carbs.

Don't buy into the vegan meal shit. There....... that's it

And don't buy a cook book .......fucks sake just leave the meat out

This

Cook your meals dont buy vegan prepped

I use a great deal of pulses thus get into a soak and boil regime

If you can, grow some herbs

Variety I feel is vital mix your protein sources to build complete range of amnio acids

Same with omega oils have a wide range of plant oils inc chia seeds pumpkin seeds and coconut oils

Oh and mushrooms again a wide variety

Oh and almonds

If you make your own wine bread

You can harvest the dead yeast very nutritious

I’ve known Matt for years (was a skater as a kid) and he lost his way a little after Dirty Sanchez, but he became a triathlete, then Ironman and now a successful vegan chef. His recipes are really balanced and work well with a training regime

I watched that. It inspired me too. I'm not vegan but i have cut right back. Anything i can substitute for vegan, i have. Ill tell you one thing. I had an on going health issue that has gone. I put it down to my diet. I don't really buy processed food. Except Greg's sausage rolls for a treat. I eat lots of types of grains, seeds, nuts, beans of all types, kefir, salad and so on. A good website is my food data if you want nutient info.

Other interesting progs on netflix are game changers and cowspiracy

Any diet that requires you to buy supplements isn't a good one!

A managed diet should give you all the nutrients you need!

We were never meant to be vegans! Your not going to save the world!

Go out and buy some nice bacon!

How do you know we were never meant to be vegans?. It suits lots of people just fine.

I don't understand why people are so preoccupied with vegan diets.

Let me know when you have a perfect diet and are having every nutrient at the correct levels every day.

Some people can't sit back and do nothing. If they know their diet is harming the environment then they will change themselves. I don't see the problem.

Oh the classic bacon comment!!.

Says a lot about your character.

Not everyone who is vegan is attempting to save the planet.

Each have their own reasons.

I'd call my self a plant eater rather than a vegan.

Your comment on supplements made me smile. The B12 you get from your meat is produced by cattle because they are FED a compound that makes them produce B12.

Understand your own diet. For your own good.

Bacon lol

Processed salt sulphate water injected poison

I note that those who are often ridiculing always mention salt laced processed erm meat?? Gregg's pasties bacon sausage

Never once do I hear eating that raw pig or raw cow muscle or raw black bird muscle

As I'm quite sure we were never

Supposed to farm salt or farm animals or use fire to change the molecular structure

Yet you do

I supplement my plant centric diet with some meat almost never processed

Yet if a person feels fully plant based is for them and they educate themselves fantastic

Many who include meat in their diet the bacon the pasty eaters most could indeed do with nutritional education themselves as most do not

A have a varied enough diet

And the limited stuf they eat is often shit

But yeah oh healthy bacon eater erm ok

Reading/London

That’s fantastic! Well done for giving it a go.

My main tips are to plan your meals in advance and make a list before going shopping. In terms of cooking look for recipes like what you’re used to eating eg google “vegan recipe for....” and you’ll easily see how you can adapt your cooking to fit your interests.

Everyone has a different preference of milk lol but the hardest one to replace is in tea and I never really found one I liked so i stick to coffee and herbal teas now. But the milks last lots longer than dairy so buy a few and experiment without worrying they will go off.

No matter what anyone says there’s no good replacement for cheese ?? I got so fed up I just quit for a year and then tried some of the better ones and I think it helped that I couldn’t really remember what it was like anymore

When you’re reading packet labels almost everything that you can’t have is an allergen so will be in bold except honey or meat so that makes it easier to spot.

Don’t beat yourself up if you mess up or make a mistake or have a weak moment- just keep calm and carry on. Be kind to yourself.

When i went vegan I had some headaches and sicky moments and I’ve since realised it was withdrawal from the hormones etc- was fine after the first month. I like to take multivitamins just to be sure esp with B12. The best one I’ve found is a spray by Better You.

Read up lots- the veganuary website has loads of info and I have lots I can send you if you have questions. Try watching some documentaries eg land of hope and glory, earthlings, cowspiracy, game changers, but beware the first 2 are very graphic- but watching them with strengthen your resolve.

Expect to be challenged by people about your choice and expect to explain silly stuff like where you get your protein (it’s in literally everything) calcium (green veg and plant milks) and other nutritional info they wouldn’t bother asking you before even if you lived on KFC ??

You’ll also get strange bizarre ethical questions e.g what if you were stranded on a desert island and there was a pig- would you eat it? Or, do you think lions should be made to go vegan too? ?? There will be many more!!!

Beware vegan facebook groups- they can be helpful but there’s also a kind of competitive vegan Ian out there that can make you despair or for veganism to feel impossible in the beginning with people saying you’re not vegan if you don’t buy a particular brand of tyre for your car, have a pet that you feel pet food, take medicines because they contain lactose or were tested on animals. Everyone has to make their own choices about how far they go with it but this will take time to work out so ignore those people and just do your best- you live in a non-vegan world so sometimes it’s hard to be 100% vegan but you will still be doing better than most people.

Any questions you’ve got or worries or recipes just hit me up- as you can tell there’s nothing more I love talking about!!

Thanks all. Im doing this as I have type 2 diabetes. Im not drastically overweight, im fit through gym, cycling and tabbing and neither smoke or drink alot. I dont want to end up like my father who is ill through heart disease and complications. My wife has also a history of illness in her family. Its a health reason for us. If you want to eat bacon thats down to you, personlly I dont care.

Again, thanks for all your comments, feel free to PM with websites etc.

Erm ok but be careful vegan is not specifically low glycemic ?

Meat is good for a type 2

Eggs exceptional for type 2

Dark dark chocolate good

Milk bad

Rice is awful

As is pure white bread

Nuts amazing seeds fantastic

Beans and fiber good

Green generally good

Red sauce brown sauce bad

I generally eat a diabetic diet it absolutely includes eggs and lean meat

If you are type two and want to stay off the drugs you MUST understand the GI and GL of carbs and how your insulin works

I'd suggest IF youre not doing it for ethical or taste reasons then it's likely to be beneficial eating some animal products

Not sure if i can post link to an external website, so google : dr greger type 2 diabetes and his article /website should pop up on how to Reverse Type 2 Diabetes.

His book 'how not to die' is awesome

Hopefully there will be some tips in there for you. Good luck

Check insta for vegan recipes and look for ones you like through the hashtags, most of then have the recipes underneath these days.

Also, join 'Accidentally vegan' social media sites. They're constantly posting new vegan products found in supermarkets and lots of stuff that you never would have thought is vegan!

Ah okay in that case you’re not going vegan, you’re going plant based. The word vegan is used to describe an ethical standpoint on the exploitation of animals that goes beyond changing eating habits for health. If you aren’t interested in animal exploitation you’re just choosing a plant based diet

I'm not vegan but I did go veggie almost a year ago. I feel so much better than I did, I've lost over a stone and my energy levels are improved, as is my mood.

The only thing I take is b12

lulah is soooooooooooooo right about cheese.

I tried it, got used to the taste, then found out it is just potato and coconut fat....... now I don't touch it.

I sometimes 'sin' and have a bit of real cheese and I don't tell anyone so that means I didn't do it

You don't have to go vegan to avoid diabetes... cut down on sugar and shite and walk more.. xxx

I bet you went to the docs and they said ....... oh dear you are just under, if you carry on you will be diabetic....... go on tell me im right

What do you mean

You dont have sugar ?

Do you mean you dont have what we term added granulated sugar

Or you dont eat carbohydrates

If you eat white bread or rice your low insulin will not be able to cope

You need to analyse and be aware of all your carbohydrates and their impact upon your blood sugar levels ie their glycemic load

For a diabetic cheese is vastly superior to bread rice

Or potatoes

I love the Minimalist Baker blog for recipes. Most of them are vegan, but you can also filter by vegetarian, dairy-free, gluten-free, or naturally-sweetened depending on your diet.

Been diabetic for 13 years and more than capable of sorting my diet out. Veganism seems a logical step bearing in mind im 11st 8, can easily run 10 miles with a 35lb pack, mountainbikr and road ride all day and spend 3 hrs lifting wrights, i.e. im fit

Diet as such is good, I know what to eat and avoid.

If people prefer to eat a vegan diet, that's their business.

I wouldn't, myself, unless I had no other choice.

I would definitely eat meat created in a lab/factory, if they ever got it cheap enough.

Happy Pear is fantastic really great recipes and instructions to cook great healthy vegan food from scratch. They also have a YouTube channel and Amanda thinks they’re really hot!
