Please please please , go and watch you tube " Fred MacDowell " especially Pt1 and Pt2 . All the greats knew about him , no one who has studied guitar has not heard off him . What you will be watching is one man a guitar and no fancy amplification tricks ,; just the man who quite possibly started it all . Then please do come back at me with possibly your revised list .
My list is as follows
Fred McDowell
Jimmy Hendrix

"Interesting fact; Eddie Van Halen played only the solo, on Beat It. All the rest was Lukather. Poor bugger gets overlooked a lot!"
Eddie van Halen is so over rated, so many better guitar players out there. |

There's always better but Eddie created a whole new sound, HIS sound. He was an innovator. |

Absolutely. It was Luke who suggested to Quincy Jones that he call Eddie to do the solo on that track because he felt he wasn't nailing it. Quincy Jones called Eddie to ask him to do the session and Eddie initially told him to Fuck Off because he didn't know anyone called Quincy! |

I couldn’t restrict to three, too many good ones and a good few on the list I’d have cited.
But as I didn’t spot these folks in the list so far (from a quick scan):
Dimebag (Darrell Abbott - RIP)
Paul Gilbert
John Petrucci
Tosin Abasi
Guthrie Govan

So many styles it's difficult..well impossible for me..I like my rock but I love my blues.
Albert King once said to Stevie Ray Vaughan " Stevie you got the makings of a good guitfiddler , you re good now but you can be better, there's a lot of good players out there, they play it hard and they play it fast but they got no soul, you got both!"
Soo true. For me it would be those in above text and Gary Moore, Knowsley, Hendrix and Page for how they experimented..so many more. Thee greatest for me is the one that fills my mind with the pleasure I need at that moment of listening. |

Bonnie Raitt is an awesome player , as is so many players mentioned above ,
To my mind and not wanting to discredit anyone else, there are only two greats .. You gotta remember Fred Mcdowells era , there was possibly no one before him doing that stuff .. his first recording was 1936 i think it was .. Maybe some guys in sheds making this stuff up . Fred said he " made the guitar speak for him " long before anyone else coined that phrase . He has no real precedent
. The rest just followed , unique in their owm way , adding bits along the way but essentially playing what had gone before them with a twist perhaps .. Then Hendrix .. he just smashed it up ... and no one followed him , because no one could ... Obviously just my opinion |

Their all good in their own right. After all it's about expressing yourself, and no one else can do that.
Jeff Beck hasn't been mentioned so far, but he's moved on to orchestral arrangements, as do many of the great bands. |

If you want to hear a monster guitarist you've never heard of, look up the South African Dan Patlanski. He is extraordinary. "

"Gilmore
Knopfler
Page
In that order I’ve decided "
Is a bit spooky but have been listening to a lot of pink floyd, led zeppelin and dire straits while I have been sat here at home this past few weeks...... as great as they are, I would Still rate Steve Vai right up there |

Could I throw in a mention here for Eric Roche (RIP) little known but a very talented session guitarist. I saw this guy many times in the few years prior to his death - he was buddies with a guitar teacher friend.
He could hold an audience for hours with his rare technique of using his guitar as a whole band! Worth a visit to his YouTube videos or website |
