I cope with medication combined with having a positive thought after a negative one to counter it, plus humour is also important..

Any other coping techniques?

"Laughter really is a good medicine "

That and exercise are the best fixes. Endorphin releases.

You just have to keep reminding yourself that when the dark/crazy times have come on, it's just a temporary feeling and it will pass. Just like it has done hundreds of times before.

I largely have a cheery disposition and that keeps me going.

For me it's constant monitoring of myself though even after monitor that to make sure I don't over assess. Then music and dance and keeping the mind busyou. My self discipline is quite ruthless but it does mean I can stay off any meds.

I usually use music. I listen to something that expresses how I'm feeling, and as I listen to other pieces the mood of the music slowly changes. I'm never sure whether the mood of the music changes because of how my depression is lessening, or vice-versa. But it helps me cope.

Getting outdoors helps. When anxiety used to get really bad I tried EFT tapping. Felt a bit daft but I think the routine of doing it for 5 mins focused my mind and calmed me down. Worth a shot for anyone struggling, there are videos on YouTube.

Music listening takes no effort. Just your ears needed ;p

Think of 2 or 3 of your best song that really get you singing along and know.

Have them handy

Positive thinking, telling yourself one good thing about yourself.

Kindness, we can often find it hard to be kind to ourselves, I find being kind to others through thoughts and random acts just as good.

There are so many things that work for different people.

distraction of some kind is generally the key... reading, crosswords, something to engage the brain, or an activity to take you to a happier place.... sex, exercise, a walk outside, bath with candles,

One thing to try and learn is your triggers, or when the down time is looming, this can be thoughts emotion or a physical thing. At this warning point start the distractions… talk to someone

Start a hobby that consumes plenty of time.

Friend of mine suffers badly but I told him about a pc farming game and he is spending so much time on it now because he says it takes him to another place and he is happy there.

He has teamed up with people online and they all work on this virtual farm together.

Not the answer to everything but it's got him looking forward to playing this farm sim.

"Taking a break from social media. "

This is a great one. I cut it out well before COVID for a bit. Back on it now for entertainment and to pick up any info that might be useful.

I read something about smartphones really not helping and I’d fallen into the trap of actually buying mindfulness apps to help. The irony of it all.

Exercise is my best method and since July last year I have not been able to get back into a routine and have noticed that moods are more of a rollercoaster than they had been leading up to June.

Managed to get on my bike yesterday in the garage so hopefully can start getting a new routine and get things more even and level.

Music.

Specifically upbeat music. I highly recommend latin dance music for this.

"Being active. Maybe some form of exercise. And being outdoors. "

Sometimes mental stimulation helps, painting, drawing, baking, etc.

That's what my dad was told when he had his breakdown. He was in hospital with it, he got to use the workshop to make things. I know it is not quite the same, but it was a coping mechanism for coping with depression afterwards.

Medication, music, dogs. I force myself to socialise even when I'm not feeling the love. Friends are a big help.
