Ice T is still one of the coolest rappers around his OG album is still up there with the best. I even had the pleasure of meeting him in Edinburgh a few years ago before his gig.

Brought up on this music, watching Yo MTV Raps, Beat Street etc.. so it's really difficult to boil it down to just a top 5. Some of my favourites of that time were:

Method Man. Oh that man's voice could make me do anything.

My all time number one! He still got the flow to this day

D.

I saw Wu Tang in Brixton about 20 years ago and went to see MM and Red man last year. I'd pay to hear him read the phonebook.

I’m not jealous Ember! Not at all....

I can’t believe you like his voice! Jo loves it! She often asks me to talk like him quietly in her ear! Did I mention me and Meth have exactly the same kinda voice? ......

D.

Im a little turned on by that myself D

Have you watched the film "How High"? - hes a funny fucker too lol"

I haven't, I'll try to source it whilst we're off.

I also like Jurassic 5. Their older stuff more than the new stuff.

You could be right, perhaps I'm getting mixed up with 'grime'.

I'm thinking of songs where they just repeat the same line twice.

That never used to happen back then. Whereas it seems to be the fashion, you have to do it.

Can you give me some examples so I can go and check them out please.

Yeah grime isn’t always best for storytelling although Kano and Wiley as mentioned are good.

I’d say Dave is probably the most talented storyteller we’ve had in a while. I compared him to Nas, I think he’s that talented for his age. Lowkey, Devlin, Ghetts and of course Akala are others. Also Nines is a good story teller although his lyrical content isn’t for everyone.

I thought Devlin was superb but I'm talking about 'Runaway' etc. 2010 maybe?

I like Dave and your right, his song about being black is a proper story and I loved how he got that fan on stage at Glastonbury.

Back in the day when I was a lad the only way you could hear rap music was on capital radio with Mike Allen.

Sadly he no longer with us but he started getting it into the mainstream here in the UK.

I don't listen to it now as I feel it's all violence towards women, waving guns about and bigging up drug taking.

Even worse you see white guys dressing and acting like they want to be black because they think that shit is cool.

Pull your fucking trousers up and stop waving your hands around like your taking bets at the track.

Yeah there's a major crossover with bands like RATM and Deftones. Blurring genres which is definitely a good thing.

I know you mean well with this but I don’t think it reads quite how you may have intended. I don’t know what you think it means to be black and why you’ve attached negativity to it when assuming white boys want to be it? People are often a reflection of their experiences, that’s what rap has always been about. Boys that behave that way aren’t doing so because they want to be black or because they are black, I assure you of that.

Big

2pac

Em

Wu Tang especially ghostface and chefs solo work

Nwa plus all their solo work

More recent stuff

I do like Dave, Swindle, kendrick, chance the rapper, loyle carner, pusha T

I must have over 200 Hip Hop albums on vinyl some real treasures in there and I listen to 2 to 3 full albums a day normally and more since lockdown.

If we’re talking just the 90’s era then I’ll spilt my list between solo rap artists and radio groups.

A lot of people have mentioned artists or groups from the 80’s or 00’s but I’ll keep it strictly 90’s.

Just my opinion.

Solo Artists

1. Tupac

2. Biggie

3. Nas

4. Prodigy

5. Redman

Honourable mention to Raekwon, Ghostface Killah and Eminem.

Groups

1. Wu-Tang Clan

2. Mobb Deep

3. OutKast

4. Capone N Noriega

5. Dogg Pound

Honourable mention to M.O.P, Black Moon, Flipmode Squad and........................................

Puff Daddy and Mase...
