Think the program substitutes the smiley faces for the word amp in the profile titles

It’s an issue with the html language that is part of the sites construction

If someone types an ‘and’ sign which is known in posh speak as an ampersand, the underlying construction of the site pics it up and creates the amp or amp amp text characters.

So if you just type ‘and’ and not use the & sign it will come out ok

I’m not computer language expert but that’s my take on it

I’m a nerd and programme web sites for my job. I’d have really struggled to explain it in non-nerd speak so helpfully. Skillz.

For those interested, it happens because these boxes we type in for messages and profiles etc could be used by “attackers” to insert code that could damage the system, or trick users into leaking passwords and such-like. So the system needs to “sanitise” our messages clean of characters and sequences of characters which could pose a risk. The “amp” is a side effect of that sanitising process.
