I dunno how many times I've seen people on the forum moan and give out about people on welfare over the years.

Well today I was driving in the car and heard on the radio that the weekly payment for people who've lost their jobs because of corona will be increased to €350.

And I'd just like to say how fucking proud I am of our "welfare state" that's taking care of its vulnerable right now, and a great big SUCK IT to to the bitchers and moaners who've always looked down their noses at people on welfare but now are very likely to need it themselves.

Well said girl. 350 will buy plenty of food. It's a big shock for a lot of people but were all in it together

Myself included. I got laid off permenantly yesterday. The 350 obvs won't cover everything, but it'll make it a lot easier for us to get by. Without it I was almost definitely gonna have to sell my car. So I'm feeling very grateful!

Thank God , Im still working and earning. People dont realise how well off they are with welfare payments in this country. I was off work for 10 weeks and had welfare payment of €203 plus work related pay of €155. Im single and no mortgage so was well able to live comfortably. I lived in UK for many years and the social payments over there are not even half. I know families will struggle in these hard gimes but just be grateful for what you have and what you will recieve.

I'm still working away and don't see that changing as I can do alot of work from home. It's just more difficult.

But i am happy to pay into a system that looks after those that needs help. Who knows I might need it myself someday.

But I would like to give a big shout out to those arrogant fools that spouted venum about the scocial protection system and those that avail of its services.

How does it feel to be signing up for it now? Will you keep it to yourself like a dirty little secret?

It's exactly what should be happening, people who work hard and have lost their jobs are looked after.

I don't look down at people on welfare. It angers me that people choose to sit on their arse and never work by choice. There are some people who genuinely can't work and need those payments and before someone has a go at me. Yes, I know people who finished school and have never worked a day in their lives, "Why would I work when I get money for free?" that's a direct quote

I am not really sure this is the same thing as Dole scroungers, these poor people have lost their jobs, should be given 350 as the bare minimum.

The entire system needs to be torn up and replaced with a fairer one to protect the vulnerable so that if they do lose their jobs they have some support.

Totally not the same thing as scroungers. But the system that allows for them is also the system that will put food on tables across the country tonight. All I'm saying is, complain about the system all you like but we'd be absolutely fucked right now without it.

Unfortunately your insurance cannot help as I've been in touch with mine. We are covered for business disruption due to fire flood and criminal damage but covid19 or similar is not part of our insurance. We also cannot put a stay on insurance payments either as in the event of fire flood or criminal damage our policies will be null and void. Sorry

Similar thing happened to me last year and I only got back to work at the start of February.

But my salary has been fecked around by the revenue ever since.

I was left short 800 in Februarys salary and 500 in this months

Back and forward phoning and emailing social welfare and the revenue.

They gave me some crap about tax credits. I told them that tax credits dont pay the mortgage or put food in the fridge and I just want my money back.

I was promised that it will all be sorted by next months pay.

I just have to wait and see

"Yes i sometimes wonder should i move south of the border we will get through this just have to remember that it is temporary but as someone above just said i think this is going to last until at least sept "

I feel for you.

I was in a business with a friend so few years ago changed my job contract to zero hour which suited me perfect.

About a year ago I decided to move back to Belfast full time, but didn't feel the need to change my contract as I was one of very few people who were getting paid for all the hours I worked and that contract really worked in my favour.

I started my own business in January and as soon as I started breaking even, my work started pulling power moves and decided to start putting me under extra pressure, so I found a new job with less responsibility and more suitable hours.

I just started a new job and worked one shift in a new place and was still working my notice in old place when this whole thing kicked in. Both places closed within a few days effectively cutting out ALL of my income.

Within a week I went from working 7 days a week to zero and zero compensation from the government, zero sick pay, zero benefits. Just a complete zero.

Technically I still have two jobs and a business. Practically - well.. Practically I'm in a middle of looking for a temporary job and man I can't wait till this blows over

Are self-employed going to get payments?

A lot of small businesses that employ maybe 3 or 4 people might never open their doors again if not supported.

I am an employer with a small business and I have several employees. My turnover is reduced by over 90% and I have more or less bankrupted a couple of other family businesses who I normally buy raw materials from and I have had to stop.

Things have been very bad for me and my family.

This new measure where 70% of a salary is paid to employees will allow me to keep trading for the time being so I am very very grateful for this.

I just cant make any more phonecalls that will ruin anyone financially.

Out in the sticks

"I am an employer with a small business and I have several employees.

I just cant make any more phonecalls that will ruin anyone financially."

Hope everything work out for you!

Thats an awful prediament to be in. For what its worth and from my own experience. You are better off telling people upfront about your situation. At least then tbey know you wont be paying for materials or goods or ecen wages. You are then giving these people a chance to get something sorted out. Best of luck with it.

"Just after setting up my own construction business this week and 3.500 paid out for insurance today and I will probably have to stop working by the end of week for god no, s how long anyway have to keep the chin up and we will get out of this. "

You should have a "14 day cooling off period" when you can cancel the policy I used to work in commercial liability so feel free to message me if you want

"Are self-employed going to get payments?

A lot of small businesses that employ maybe 3 or 4 people might never open their doors again if not supported."

Yes if you have fallen foul to the illness u can apply and if ur buisness has had to close u can also apply

Never since the crash I had so much work booked in for the coming weeks and month, it's all gone. Boom! Anyhow applied for the payment, it will keep me afloat. Customers all said they will reschedule once this horror stuff is over. In the meantime I will check out my online options.

I just want to say thank you all so much for your supportive comments. I've decided to go with it and pay it because at the moment construction is still going and I can still keep my subcontractors in work for now which they need at this time.(no more than 1 on site at any time).I also need insurance for the the companies I do regular work for and if a emergency happens in any of the companies day or night then I can go and fix the problem.
