Hi!
So we're all in a flutter about Covid-19. And rightly so. I am not a medical professional but I am a front line worker. Some of the information we're being fed is cause for concern. It's not Doomsday but the next month or so will not be pleasant.
I've been doing some reading and wanted to see if my understanding of this situation is accurate.
I'd appreciate any medical professionals correcting me if I'm wrong.
So, Covid-19 is here, and highly infectious. There's nothing we can do to stop it. The reason we're in a "DELAY" phase (limited social interaction, self isolating etc) is to stagger the amount of admissions to hospitals so as not overwhelm and crash the health system. It can reasonably be assumed we might all catch the virus eventually but these measures and the ones to be introduced in the coming weeks are all aimed at reducing the burden on the health system? So we don't all get sick within a week?
Would I be right in saying this?
Ans please I'm not looking for arguments or snide comments. I'm just trying to understand. |

Thats my general understanding of it too..
Plus the hoped better treatments and a vaccine are found.
Which is why I think we are looking at alot longer than 2 weeks for the social isolation |

"No. Wrong. We won’t all catch it. Far far from it. What is the population of China?, how many caught it?
What is the population of wuhan ( in China)? How many caught it?"
We MIGHT all catch it EVENTUALLY.....

To be honest, this is basically what I thought the whole lock down was about, that it will be near impossible to "kill" it but necessary to delay it as the health service here will never cope! |

It seems pretty shitty though. It's like the Banks again.
"Remember when we had regulations and laws and stuff about what the banks could do with your money? Yeah well they ignored all of that and lost it all so now we all have to give them more of your money via pay cuts and taxes. Y'all good? Sound."
Now it's," Well basically we haven't invested in our health care system in decades leading to a situation where they don't even have beds to the regular patients, never mind the viral patients. So what you're all just gonna have to do is stay at home and isolate for 2-3 weeks because we're terrible at Governing. "...... |

To be fair, and u are spot on, I dont think there is many countries in the world, regardless of how good their health care system is , that wont be under serious pressure from this if it gets as bad as predicted. And not many countries like China that can build a hospital from scratch in 10 days |

Taiwan has only 46 confirmed cases and 1 death in a population of 11 million, because they immediately closed their border's, introduced social distancing and quarantine and it worked. Ireland has triple that number of confirmed cases already. No we won't all get it but many will, most will recover but some won't be so lucky |

We all might be carriers, and getting sick just those whom have weak immune system or serious problems with the respiratory system.

My understanding is that self isolating will eventually kill off the virus if it has no host to spread to then it does.. If we all were to self isolate stay indoors with family it would be eradicated in 3 weeks at least.. Doubt it has much to do with overloading the health care system.. If things get that bad they will use other buildings like college campuses.. Hotels and the likes to put the sick in |

Yes, by slowing the spread it slows the pressure on the health service. The pressure will be intense regardless but nothing like trying to cope with an out of control spread of virus

Some people wont get it but carry it & pass it on, some could just have slight sniffles with temperature & again pass it on. Some will suffer & unfortunately some wont make it. It's fear of the unknown.

Well that's already happening.
Templemore is being refitted as a field hospital as are several army barracks.... Hotels are the next step.

Civil defence maybe and other volunteers , I’m sure some in the coast guard and the like have some basic medical training . There is a medical unit in the army . It will be all hands on deck . And we have to do our part by staying put at home with our kids xx |

They won't be is the short answer.. It'll be 1 doctor and a couple of nurses running around tending to 100 sick people.. Unless they bring in volunteers who knows... |

With respect you're wrong
Even if the entire world was to stop for 3 months there would be a small chance the virus would still be somewhere, and it's completely impossible for the entire world to stop for 3 months because billions would die of starvation
Even if we could find a way to make this isolation work, you have to understand this virus originates from an animal, the latest theory i saw today indicates that it came from a bat and not a fish as was originally thought so it could all start again
The virus may be here for the rest of time but like others before it we may learn to live with it and our bodies may build up immunity either from catching the virus or from vaccination if and when it's available
I have spent all my working life in medical laboratories and I can assure you here and now that they have isolated the virus, they are examining it and they have already developed antibodies to vaccinate people because that's what they do.
The big problems are that the vaccine has to be made in vast quantities and also it has to be put through clinical trials before being made available so that's possibly late 2021
It's also possible that the FDA may authorise field trials without full clinical trials given the seriousness of the virus but probably not.
They will also be studying the half life of the virus in various conditions and trying to get a handle on how to slow it
So basically they are buying two weeks to get an idea of what to do, not to try to eradicate the virus.
Disclaimer
While I have worked in these labs and have a very good understanding of how it works I'm by no means an expert and this is my opinion not fact
The only fact we know is it's a very dangerous virus which will cause many deaths regardless of anything we can do short term |

I retract the bit about the testing, it's been declared false news they haven't identified the antibody it's still an RNA virus identification test. But the best minds in the world are having sleepless nights so fingers crossed |

It would achieve alot more than ur opinion on another thread yesterday where u said the country shouldn't be put on lockdown for another few weeks and we see how we get on.. oh bar cities u said. Because this virus only affects people in cities.. all the while contradicting yourself in the EXACT same post by sayin Boris should get the finger out and close down the UK and Northern Ireland and then we be "golden"..its not about panicking. Give this thing the respect it deserves instead of sprouting all u hear is scare tactics. Whole countries are not being put on lockdown for the laugh. ...ignorance really is bliss |

The risk is to the elderly and those with underlying health conditions especially respiratory.
Infection rates are estimated to run as high as 60%-70% I’m taking that figure from WHO experts who explained why the UKs Herd Immunity thesis wouldn’t work (it requires high 90% infection)
The issue is that if 60% includes 60% of elderly and underlying health problems those will very quickly overwhelm the health system of any country. In reality that 60% could include way more than 60% of the elderly.
For us the solution is to self-isolate everyone in that high risk group. Logan’s Run. It will come to that but for now a wider slowing down of social interaction seems wise. |

Think it's people with that "everybody needs to grow up and cop on" attitude are the ones to be most worried about. U might not get any symptoms but could infect others. Think it's time people like that copped the fuck on and started taking this thing seriously.
Not worried one bit tbh never said this wasn't something serious that don't mean I should go into panic mode
Yea can clearly see that from your posts on the subject
Oh so I'm supposed to be panicking then not exactly logical what good do it achieve but by all means work away if you are
It would achieve alot more than ur opinion on another thread yesterday where u said the country shouldn't be put on lockdown for another few weeks and we see how we get on.. oh bar cities u said. Whole countries are not being put on lockdown for the laugh. ...ignorance really is bliss "
It's interesting how you have to go through other threads to help you respond to me for starters I never said the virus is only in the big cities so I'm not sure where you got that information small town shops should be allowed to stay open so people can get supplies but of course that may not be fair on those who do live in the cities so plan may not work but it was merely a suggestion not a demand big difference secondly I said for all transport coming in and out of the country should be stopped and for the UK to do the same so the virus can be completely contained what part of that am I contradicting myself I never said this was one big joke either so your opinion is if we all panic things will get better I assure you I'm showing no ignorance just because I'm not losing my mind over this but like I said if that's you then work away nothing to do with me I wish you the best of luck is all i will say about that |

"Hi!

Dude iv seen your posts on this the last few days. I dont have to go back through other threads to see it. Your only concern on this whole thing seems to be people panic buying Think I'd prefer to listen to the medical experts and governments that are clearly taking drastic measures on a pandemic that we have never seen the likes off in our lifetime, than somebody more concerned with people buying too much in the shops. Maybe u are afraid they will buy all the full stops for your sentences Let's see where u stand in 2 weeks if this thing gets anywhere near as serious here as it has in Italy or even Spain. U might be hard as nails and not worried at all, but what about people that dont have your obvious super health and immune system? People that cant visit loved ones for the next while. The people that are out of work. The businesses that might never reopen. The frontline workers that will be overwhelmed by this and will have to face it every day. The families that wont be able to give proper funerals to loved ones..But hey...its all just scare tactics in your opinion. How about taking stock of what is actually happening in other countries. But then again you dont care at all one bit do u so is kinda like pissing into the wind typing all this. |

Seriously what hell is wrong with you you call me out for my grammar didn't know this was some kind of exam and yeah my concern is with this panic buying especially for those who can't get to the shops as often or are restricted because of fear of getting this virus but people plough away shops profits are probably sky rocketing at the moment but that will surely slow when their Stock diminishes I've merely given my opinion on the matters I'm not expecting everyone to agree with it but for you to come out to say I don't care what's going on you know fuck all about me I give a fuck about my loved ones and there is no other prick that will tell me otherwise like I said before I have a mother with underlying illnesses my brother has epilepsy my son has autism so go fuck yourself to go round to say I don't care i rather go out in the middle of nowhere if I was to get the virus than passing it on to any of them we shall see who stands after 2 weeks all you have been doing is picking at straws having a go at me thinking I'm an easy target to have a go at I've given my opinions and I couldn't give 2 fucks if you agree with me or not and I wouldn't be the only one with them views this is my final say on the matter don't like tuff shit |

"No. Wrong. We won’t all catch it. Far far from it. What is the population of China?, how many caught it?
What is the population of wuhan ( in China)? How many caught it?" I suppose the big difference between us wuhan is that they are a communist country. They do as they are told or else.... |
