I disagree, teachers in Ireland only this week have come out and said they hide their sexuality for fear it will impact their career.
And on the case the op mentioned, he comes from a different generation, has a family and wife that still seem to be standing by him! I’m sure it was a massive deal for him!!
I just hope it was his own free decision and he wasn’t forced into “coming out” by a tabloid story in the works

As much as I would normally agree with those who would question, innocently and genuinely I must add, why it's something that ought to be considered "newsworthy" nowadays I think it's important to consider that sadly people with his standing in the public eye aren't allowed a private life.
So I think "owning" his announcement is a noble and selfless thing for him to have done, personally. For he and his family's sake.
Also, I think it's worth noting that accepting one's sexuality is not as straightforward for some as it is for others. So, especially on here, I hope everyone can acknowledge that when it comes to all the 'labels' thrown about.

In this day and age it really shouldn't be necessary for a gay man to hide his sexuality, marry a woman and live a lie for years, but homophobia still remains stubbornly pervasive in society unfortunately. |

I disagree 
I am bi, but only a couple very very close friends and my husband know (fab aside)! I can never see myself coming out publicly. Thankfully the younger generation seem to be far more open and accepting and in the words of the ever exceptional David Williams ‘ Let’s hope we are moving towards a world where no-one has to come out anymore, they can just be who they are and celebrate that‘  |

It’s pretty clear that his wife & kids support & love him, & this announcement. For the record .. why would being gay tarnish his reputation as ‘Mr clean family man’? Especially as it’s not a ‘big deal’!?!?! |

Think its quite deceptive of him if his wife didnt know..many gay men lead on women for years so they can have a family then come out when the kids are raised..if they were honest about it from the beginning many wouldnt have children at all  |

They are either born gay or they are not, gay people cant have it both ways.
They cant have the scientific world agree with them that they are born gay, and then claim "I didnt know till i was 50 odd". |

I myself didn’t know until my mid thirties that I was Bi - married and 3 kids at that stage! I didn’t deceive my hub. . Just grew up in a world where it wasn’t discussed so thought my teenage phases were just that! Thankfully my hub supports and loves me and has being by my side as I finally get to explore my sexuality.
My finally word is fair play and good luck to anyone who feels ready to be their true selves |

I suspect one would know if they were gay or not..its not a case of happily married for 25 years then all of a sudden they become gay..perhaps im wrong on that |

Has he admitted to sleeping around while married ? . Being gay bi or any other term one chooses to describe their sexuality is irrilvent as long as they are committed to they person they are with. From what I have read so far he had been the model husband and his wife and children fully supports his choice to come out. Something they would hardly do if he was playing around. Also, how does this in anyway make his image unclean ? You sound like a Catholic priest from the 60's |

Think most people thought it anyway about him. Either way hes brave man and his family is by his side. None of peoples business either way and they can put whatever label onto him they want.

The fact that Mr Schofield (if that's really his name) came out as Gay instead of Bi would indicate that perhaps Gordon or some other individual may have tried blckmailing him (perhaps)!
Anywho the poor Gopher deserves a special mention in this time of closet clearing
