Most smart tvs have the app built in and you just have to log in as normal to your account.
If its a dumb tv add a chromecast and its a smart tv |

When he logs in using his account are there lists of movies and series already up or is the screen just blank |

Obviously they have signed into their account yes?
In the side bar go into settings and the get help option..try reload netflix and if that doesn't work go into contact them section to get help |

I'm just at house now. I saw a film on the list, selected it and it played perfect but when I go into search bar and type film names in, they won't come up |
