Tragically the whole band aid /live aid project only served to transform the evil Ethiopian government from the third or fourth poorest country in the world to the best equipped military on the African continent. They had already napalmed rebel areas in Eritrea, thereby causing the "famine" and were now in a position to really turn the screw. I find it hard to listen to that song without picturing Geldof playfully slapping the shoulder of the genocidal monster that was running Ethiopia at the time.
The intention was good but the outcome was a disaster for the people of Eritrea. |
