That time K.L.F. burned a million pounds

Remember that?
Just watched a video of them talking about it on The Late Late Show from 1994 or '95.
They make the point that if it was squandered on lavish items no one would have batted an eyelid.
Considering that people appear to waste money every day on needless services and items, what are your thoughts?
A great piece of Art or a ridiculous waste of money to get attention? |

I don't think they ever confirmed what it stood for but one I've heard of was Kopyright Liberation Front.

What stood out for me then was not so much
that KLF had set alight a million quid
(which in those days was a lot of money  ... )
but the rationale behind their actions...
They realised after seeing an MJ video that
they were not going to be the best...
...it could also have been an expensive publicity stunt
that backfired.
Shame that KLF won't be remembered primarily
for their music as they were a seriously talented band

I think that was one of the points they were making though. No one gets upset when people waste money on stupid things because the money was used as it is intended to be, exchanged for goods or services regardless of how wasteful they are. At least you get something for your money.
It raises the question of what money really means to us. |

I think that was one of the points they were making though. No one gets upset when people waste money on stupid things because the money was used as it is intended to be, exchanged for goods or services regardless of how wasteful they are. At least you get something for your money.
It raises the question of what money really means to us."
I dint get upset when peolle spend their own money on stupid things because they probably get an element of joy out of it and itbis their cash...
But to burn it to make a point?
I think that point could be made with a press release and a 1mil donation to shelter....

They pumped most their cash into developing new bands. Then in a moment or clarity or madness came up with this idea as art!  |

And it was their money to do with as they pleased.
And technically by burning the money and taking it out of the system they increased the value of every other pound in circulation (supply and demand), albeit by a tiny amount.
So in a way they did give a small amount to a larger chunk of the population
Of course we won't all agree one way or the other but man it was some statement. |

Well because when someone spends 1mil even on something I thinknis silly it creates jobs. Someone has to build that sportscar or what ever.

The only thing we know for 100% certainty in this life is death
It was verified at the time and in latter years a member of KLF said he regretted the stunt now

Ah yeah, I'm not arguing with your point of view. Obviously a lot could have been done with the money. I just have to admire the pair for having the balls to do it.
Seemingly before they burned it they wanted to nail the million pounds to a board and sell it to the Tate Gallery for £750,000, meaning the gallery would instantly make a profit of £250,000 but they said it would be too much of a security risk.
I just like when people do such off the wall things. It's far more interesting. |

In 1994 I was working in a London bank counting house, where money (damaged, defaced notes etc) was counted before being sent to the furnace to be destroyed. Crap job btw. But it was common knowledge in those circles that the money used by KLF for this was due to be destroyed anyway and was supplied by a bank for this stunt. So sorry to burst that bubble but it didn't cost KLF 1 million quid to pull that off. |

That was a flipping genius moment from them! And also the sheep story. And the way they dropped out of the stage - 'the most self-destructive act in the musical history'... And yeah, it makes you think a lot about finances and how your money go away, and actually does it matter lol

Banksy shredding the painting that was up for auction was art.
This was just them wasting money. I don't have a bleeding heart so I think they can set their things on fire if they want.
Driving a landrover through Dublin city gives you no extra enjoyment over driving a vw polo. People waste their money on it for a bit of a status symbol, for people to look at them.
But i am of the opinion of so what, let them have a landrover if they want, who cares.
I am 100% totally against thinking people who do well should donate to charity. They 100% should feel no obligation to do so. |
