I'm old enough to remember the 80's
..and a little of the 70's too
Anyway, there were a few slang words that were
bandied about that are probably not used today
so wondering what slang words or phrases
did you hear growing up
and what was the meaning behind the slang?
Just a bit of fun here guys |

"A sentence I haven't heard used in ages is "Hows your gee"
When we were cool 12 and 13 yr olds we used to say it to every girl that walked past use "
---------------
"...Or how's it growing?"
(teen alternative to "how's it going?")

Her ma asked me to help with the wear after the dinner and i didnt know what to do.
When i explained what it meant in Dublin...red faces all round |

"wearin the face off her"
This was when a young gentleman decided to kiss
a young lady
Also known as "the shift"
(not to be confused with work)
...and best time to do that was during
"The slow set" !! |

Is "tackies" only a limerick word?

What does it mean??? "
Tackies are runners/trainers and still used today. Think it's just a limerick thing but the rubber bandits spread it about a bit. |

We used to have "fleckies"
but those were lads who wore shiny tracksuits
and WHITE socks back in the 90's
...which was a no-no if you wanted to get into
certain nightclubs in Dublin...
Ahhh fun times!!!! |

Waterford |
Back in the day old people used to refer to scumbags as "A dirty rotten article", or a "Tipper". Tipper could also mean a misbehaving child.
In school we used the word 'dude'. We'd ask someone were they a dude? If they said yes we would inform them that a dude is an ingrown wart on a camels bollocks.
Don't ask me how that came about. |
