I'm just wondering is your worth you're while working. Most people I know who are on benefits All their life are better off .
On average I work 50 / 60 hours a week. Busting my nuts off too.
I'm into my fast cars and bikes.
But at the end of the day are we really better off.
What's your thoughts on this ?

"Self worth is a key factor as well as finacial worth....
"
This. I was self employed for a few years and it was hard work. Closed the business and signed on, hated every minute of it. Everytime I went in to have a meeting was practically reduced to tears with the bullying tactics , why haven't you got a job, what are you doing? We will have to cut your payments etc. I was applying for jobs everyday even jobs that I wouldn't have been qualified to do but thought will do anything.
It is definitely a self worth thing and I see loads of people who don't work and seem to have the life of Reilly but way I look at it, everything I have I've worked hard for it and proud of it.
And daytime tv is shite. I'm on leave for a month, few days in I'm bored already lol |

I like to think of work and a job as separate things.
Work can be a passion. A full time job is just a waste of time.
If you want all the shit that you don't need but fills the hole of emptiness in you for a limited time then yeah, a job is probably worth it if that's what you want out of life.
If you recognize that you have a passion that when just thinking about it lights a fire in your soul then no, a full time job will never make you happy regardless of how much money you make.
You need to find balance. I'm a realist and acknowledge the need be earning money as nothing is free. But you need to really think hard and figure out what's important to you.
You said you're into cars. Then only you can decide if you're into it enough to invest more of your time doing it.
While most people work 5 days with 2 off, I now work 2 days with 5 off and it's the best decision I have ever made.
I took a massive pay cut but I'm happier mentally, physically and spiritually now than I have ever been.
I actually go to bed looking forward to the next day.
A job should fund your lifestyle, not become it.
With regards being on the dole, I've done that and yeah, you can get away with a lot but you can't pursue any interests or hobbies as you have no money to spare.
Not to mention the feeling of no worth.
So yeah, in conclusion, find a way to balance work and play. |

Thankfully I'm passionate about my job even though all my colleagues think I'm mental lol. Working 6 days on 4 off shift hours which is hard at moment but hopefully by end of year will be off shift. Will take a pay cut but be nice to have weekends and a regular sleep pattern. |

Some true Steph. You have to have that self worth and feel you've achieved something by your own endeavours rather than been handed it.
I'm the same at Christmas/New year as we shut down for two weeks. After Christmas everyone is back at work and it is becomes a trifle boring and champing at the bit to get to work. Would prefer to have the time off when it suited me or at least when the weather was better. |

Oh don't get me wrong I love my time off at Christmas and New year it is the bit in the middle. Effectively I will stop on 20/12 and go back 06/01.
Friends and family are working up to 24th and go back 27th till 31st. The only good thing this year is I know lots of friends taking the 3rd of January off to make it a good long break so hopefully plenty of catching up. |

Yeah, I know loads of people struggling, all in what would traditionally be described as good jobs. Bank, Insurance workers, Office workers, etc etc..
I don't begrudge people falling on hard times and getting benefits, I dont even begrudge people falling into a bit of a benefit trap and finding it hard to get off them.
But its obvious a lot of people do nothing but exploit the system, and all who do, seem to have less worries than most normal hard workers. |

I think a good work life balance on a very important factor. At the moment I work 4 evenings at the weekend. Very unsocialable hours but it works for me. I get a lot of free time which makes it worthwhile. It can get boring at times but that's were fab helps Only downside is I'm off when most people are at work so some days can be very long. |

So true GP, it is getting the balance that is so important.
Too many people believe things make you happy and that you can be happy all the time because they see it on social media. You cannot be happy at the time because if you were how would you know you were happy. What you can be is content and that comes from realising it is people and your relationship with them that is truly precious not material things.
Also as you said finding that passion and fulfilling it.
I like many others fell into the trap of believing work was the be all for me. I was the breadwinner and had to work all the hours to make as much as could to provide things for my family.
I paid a heavy price for that.
Now I work but cut out the weekends, say no to additional work being dumped on me, taking my breaks during the day.
I realise that my employer needs me probably more than I need him.

Sorry to hear you wear brought to tears. If we're from another country you would have no problem.
I have never been on benefits.
As you say they have the life of Reilly. They are getting to much on benefits. For example a son living home with his mom getting€200 a week no bills or nothing.
I know people on benefits who have been looking for work got offered jobs and didn't take them . Why is this ?
Salary €400/ €450 a week so that's €200 more a week than your dole. Is it worth that extra for 5 days work.
Take traveling cost out of that lunch etc
If benefits were halved for the likes above I bet you they be working in the morning.
There s any amount of work out there.
On that note I'm thinking of taking some time off just to think things over. What's for the best.
Last few years I have devoted to much time to work and lost track of time.

Anyone under 25 only gets a 100 a week, in college don't get anything and can't sign on for summer. As for plenty of work yes if you live in Urban areas and now that younger drivers on learner permits can't drive unaccompanied it's even harder. My son is looking at a job 40km away he will have to rent a room while there working as he doesn't drive and the public transport is crap in the north west.
Definitely take time out I've learnt over years to the majority of employers your a number nothing more and if they had to make cuts to save money no issue giving you a p45.
The Dole system is so wrong in this country but when our government can claim expenses for haircuts and give themselves payrises when they like nothing will change |

The trouble is that the average paye worker doesn't know how to work the system, I see people every day that have never worked in their lives, a house for €60 a week and every benefit going , I'm working 60 /70 hours a week sometimes pay a mortgage and bills and don't have an extravagant lifestyle by any means ,
The only consolation is that anything I have is my own and when I reach retirement age I'll own my house and its equity , that's what I keep telling myself anyway ![](/icons/s/biggrin.gif) |

Work/life balance is vital.
I learned the hard way in a previous job where I was working 5 x 10 hour days with 2 hours travel per day on top.
My health suffered and I ended up with chronic headaches and was in hospital for over a week and a week off to recover. First time sick leave on over a year except for a dry socket after a back tooth extraction 8 months previously.
I got a written warning from work.
It changed my outlook totally and I realised I was just a number and the more you do the more is expected!
Now Im contemplating partial retirement to enjoy life.
As my Dad used to say 'you're a long time dead!' |

I really don't where you would be better doing all close people say it will get better but at minute it feels like just digging massive holes everywhere between debt family and health I suppose.. |

Equity for the government to take if you have to go into hospital long term at an old age. |

I was on the edge of a nervous breakdown for years in various stressful jobs. I rarely saw the kids I was like a zombie. Losing my family home due to the breakup of my marriage made me revalue my life.
I now work part time. I'm there every day on the school runs. I drive a shitty old car I haven't taken a foreign holiday in year's. But my kid's rather a happy Mammy and a simple life. |

My career is a big part of my identity and plays a part in my self worth for sure. If I won the lotto in the morning though I’d probably do something else as my work isn’t my big passion in life (I haven’t found that yet). Is it worth it? I don’t know but what I do know is I wouldn’t be suited to staying at home as house work and domesticity bores me. On the other hand if the lotto dream worked out and I had endless money I think I’d think out ways of amusing myself while my minions did the house work! |
