Had this conversation over the weekend

If you are out for a meal with friends relations don't matter

And you have a meal and maybe your driving not drinking or just have a beer

Is it fair or

Should you pay for just your tab

Or chip In to pay for someone else who had a few bottles of wine also

Just thoughts

If you're the one doing the driving then the drinkers should pay!!

I don't think it's fair to pay for others boozing it up. I'm not a big drinker.

Honestly I'm a big fan of paying for yourself and what you've imbibed. I think its only fair.

Dublin

If you're driving others home as a pre agreed arrangement then no, they should cover your drinks. If it's just your choice then split the food bill and each pay for your own drinks. In Dublin the price of a mineral can be high enough on its own.

I dont drink often so do alot of driving....

To be honest I dont care I split the bill, sometimes there can be the price of a bottle of wine between some dishes anyway

Thanks for the feed back guys

Would not be a big drinker either but have taken a drink during a meal but have paid a lot more than what my meal and drink cost

Well I suppose if it's a reciprocal thing where sometimes others in the pool are abstaining or driving, then it's fair. But if you're constantly expected to subsidise the drinking habits of others, then you can speak up and say you're only paying your own costs (it may be just sheer thoughtlessness), put up with it, avoid social occasions where you're being put in this position or rethink your choice of social company.

These things usually work out fair in the long run and not worth the hassle of trying to itemise bills.....i'd always just split the bill equally

We have always split the food tab but never the drink. We usually pay our drink at the bar on order. I dont see why an non drinker should part pay for my 3/4 pints during dinner.

If out with one or two friends would just split the bill as none of us big drinkers. Of out with a bigger group I just buy my own as don't do shots and can control what I'm drinking

middle of nowhere

I don't drink so I'm usually the designated driver. I still split the bill evenly.

By all means split the cost of the meal, but drinks should be separate. I've had this situation arises before at a birthday dinner and a group at the table were insisting the drinks bill be spilt. Reason being it transpired is they hadn't enough to cover what they had drank themselves with all the cocktails they ordered. Not to ruin the birthday girls dinner myself and another guy ended up €80 each out of pocket. Never again.

Yeah share your pane thinking on same lines myself have no probs with meal or even adding part cost of meal if it's someone's birthday

Just it can be taughtless

When it ends up several bottles of wine etc you never had

Some people may be on a budget for what ever reason also

So think it mite be food only from now on

Thanks for your comments
