OMG, Tramore was CHAV Central yesterday !

Dublin

I was visiting friends in Kilkenny over the weekend and I sujested we go to the seaside, as it was such a glorious day. The guy of the couple seemed a bit dubious, but we went along to Tramore. It was my first time there. I soon clicked why my friends were so dubious, it was chocoblock with spivs. I have never seen so many chavs anywhere in my life and never realised what a big thing this culture is in Ireland, and I've been visiting this country with over ten years. I've worked and lived in the Killarney / Millstreet area in the past and can not get over how different the people are there from 100 k away.

It was shocking. Little kids being left unwatched, everyone drinking heavily outside bars, guys with the most tasteless tats ( don't get me wrong, I do like a cool tat, but these were like sheep, every one as tasteless and unindividual as the next ), almost all the women were peroxide potty mouthed and classless. My friends told me this was not a reflection of the majority of Co. Waterford people and many were from towns in neighbouring counties.

I've always heard Irish people complaining about the Travellers, but I have to say Travellers seem very cultured, respectable and intelligent in comparison to the louts and loutettes that swarmed at Tramore yesterday.

I feel so sorry for the residents of Tramore and the poor kids of those who took over that town probably all weekend and not a cop in sight. I know I'm going to be called a snob or worse by some, but this is not a class thing as most of my Irish friends are either working class or lower middle class and are hard working people with class, morals and are responsible parents.

So Fab Ireland, am I being ridiculous or do you have worries about this imported chav culture that seems far more like Benefit Britain than the Ireland of the majority cultured, stylish and savy working CLASS people ?

I’m in Tramore almost every day but stay clear of the pubs and amusement park areas because of the non locals that come and treat it like magaluf during the summer. Don’t get me wrong. I know it’s not everyone that’s like that. But it’s so much nicer out there during the winter when none of them are around.

That's a great description, Magaluf. I feel so sorry for the really nice local people I met working in the shops and the hotel. I was in Dungarvan on Saturday and found everyone there very impressive, and there was no chav culture. Where are all those non locals that were in Tramore yesterday coming thete from ? Most of them had this weird urban accent and they were loke sheep. The frightening thing was so many of them seemed to have kids with them. I so hope thise kids rebel against their parents and get an education and a value system.

Not really. We have ten times the population in the UK, so it's not a surprise to see lots of Spivs at the seaside, but not like Tramore, where it was 95% drongos and most has kids. This was not the Ireland most UK folks know and love.

Yeah, sorry about that, we usually try to keep them indoors when tourists are about.

A week in Santa Ponsa be more affordable than staying a few days in Tramore or anywhere else in Ireland this time of year with the prices they decide to charge

In my class of 30 kids in secondary school, in Dublin, I was the only true blue.

Every single one of them had culchie parents, but every single one of them had some sort of Dublin accent.

The truth is a bit embarrassing. Dubs rarely leave Dublin and head to other counties, the country side just smells like cow shit to us. We go to Spain.

Being not far from there and having grown up there all those years ago I can speak with some knowledge of the matter. Tramore is more than just the amusements (or merries as some will call them). It is more than the endless bits of rubbish strewn all over the prom from people too ignorant to pick up their Dooley's or Massimo's chipper rubbish. It is more than the overflowing pubs on a sunny day with people swilling back their tipple of choice.

It is more than the seemingly endless supply of non-residents showing up and claiming the place as their own for a week or a weekend in the summer.

Tramore has unfortunately become a cheap "Blackpool" for Irish having a staycation.... Primarily Dublin folk but not solely so.

The people of Waterford and Tramore residents see Tramore for the prom..... Waves crashing over it both in summer and winter. The gorgeous beach.... Miles long.... All the way down to the sand dunes and around the back strand.....gorgeous in summer and deliciously wind swept in winter.

Please don't let the image that you saw sway your mind towards thinking that Tramore and its residents are to blame for that chav element - part of tge charm of the place is that it is accessible to all and sundry alike..... Don't hang out at the top end of the town when they are about there... Move down towards the Brownstown end and beyond.

The beach was stunning but it was impossible to appreciate the town as it was just taken over by this scummy hoard. The carparks were full with cars ( majority of which did not have D plates ), and my local friends there said the majority were daytrippers from parts of nearby towns. I just think it's a pity that so many 'Irish' people are apeing the worst minority element of a British subculture.

I feel sorry for the decent true Irish people in the estates and towns where these spivs came from and the people of Tramore.

Every country has an "underclass" it's just that they have become more visible.

your imagination

This seems to happen wherever coastal resorts have allowed arcades and amusements.

But by no means is bad holiday behaviour restricted to places like Tramore or Courtown... Resort towns and villages that have actively resisted going that route have instead become the holiday playgrounds of the spoiled, rich, entitled brats of all ages who buy the Indo and their croissants in their pyjamas while the SUV they so desperately need to traverse the mountainous terrain of D4 is parked askew outside the shop door, blocking traffic while ignoring all or any nearby car parks, who carry out bellowing conversations across busy streets about the rugby or golf, who loudly inflict their side of every publicly held mobile phone call on the world in bars and restaurants, who drop litter as often as their counterparts drop f-bombs, who's kids take over every available road and footpath with their go-karts, while expecting everyone else to get out of their way, who send same kids out on bikes without helmets or even any instruction as to which side of the road they should be using.

Class is something you either have or you don't, it's not something you're born into.

Weekends in Tramore te d to be a bit tardy alright, but mon to fri is generally much quieter.

I have a place there and rarely see boozed up whatever you called them midweek.

Its a beautiful town year round

Although I do agree that the amusements drag it down unfortunately

I have to say I think in the past few years Tramore as town has improved dramatically. The lower end prom in particular with the addition of the skate rink, the inclusion playpark and Lifesaving surf centre.

I often brought my kids to the amusements and for an ice cream as they were growing up.

I and they have fond memories of it.

That end of Tramore is my favorite. I’m usually sitting in a corner of tbay cafe reading a book and enjoying the sea air. Love it.

You're more than welcome to go back and stay where you came from if you're that upset by people. If I were to answer you in the way I suspect most people on here would like to I would most likely find myself on the naughty step for a few days.
