It's not a secret than am a vegan and what surprised me that I don't need to eat beef or poultry to be sick

These days we live in hurry, so more often going to the shop instead of preparing it ourselves its the option. I used to buy time to time smoothies, juices or salads.

Please be careful. I'm suffering from the food poisoning

"We are constantly warned to wash/rinse vegetables before consuming"

We are but the problem is in the production process and some people can spread bacteria as well

I use vinegar, warm water and soda to wash fresh fruit and veggies.

Salads are common sources of food poisoning, including listeria, salmonella and e.coli.

Rice is a high-risk food if not properly cooked or if not cooled and refrigerated quickly and thoroughly re-heated.

I'm from a Rice eating country in the Americas as one of our main staples! I dont ever recall anyone getting sick from rice! and i mean rice is washed, cooked, left over is left there to be refried for dinner or breakfast with beans!

while it might contain some level of bacteria, many types of food do ! excuse me Op for saying this but I don't think is correct to spread mass hysteria in regards to food!

and yes not denying that some food in the world can be dangerous! i mean i believe some poor people in thailand eat dumped left over cookes meats given a second chance , look up pagpag ! Haiti people eat mud cookies , i mean the list of examples is huge ! but this doesnt mean our guts dont come equip to deal with must things we come exposed too

now.. good hygiene is another thing if you preparing food and you scratch your ass can be more harmful than left over rice! not washing your hand before eating! i mean we always tell kids but how many adults do it! not many i believe !

Despite being a big veggie fan I think such a smoothie would make me sick even when it's not contaminated.

Anyhow I hope you're getting better soon.

I made the comment on rice and it is a warning frequently seen on government food safety sites, so I don't think it is correct to call it mass hysteria.

Any food is potentially dangerous if not cooked correctly,if left too long at room temperature to allow bacteria to grow, and if not re-heated properly after cooling.

U must be the only person in the entire world that does not know the risks of re heating cooked rice;

How does reheated rice cause food poisoning?

Uncooked rice can contain spores of Bacillus cereus, a bacterium that can cause food poisoning. The spores can survive when rice is cooked.

If rice is left standing at room temperature, the spores can grow into bacteria. These bacteria will multiply and may produce toxins (poisons) that cause vomiting or diarrhoea.

The longer cooked rice is left at room temperature, the more likely it is that the bacteria or toxins could make the rice unsafe to eat.

Rules of eating rice. Eat soon after it has been cooked. For leftovers and you intend to eat later; refrigerate within an hour of cooking . Eat within 24 hours. When reheating , ensure it is piping hot before consuming . These are basic rules that apply to nearly all left over food but rice has particular characteristics that mean you need to be a little more careful. I freeze rice if I have left overs and have no problems consuming it as long as it is piping hot when re- served. Just common sense really as is washing hands and having clean food preparation surfaces and utensils.

very assuming of you that im Asian! nothing wrong with India or pakistan ot bangladesh for the matter! and that is not accurate that spices kill bacteria if they did would a chilli be a great antibiotic?

you are right in saying people from different regions have different tolerant most of it comes from exposure to pathogen and building immunity to them! as mentioned before out guts are more than capable to deal with huge amount of pathogens !

Yeah I seen a show where they tracked bacteria moving around a kitchen, and it nearly all came from vegetables.

This is because everyone washes their hands after raw meat touching, but loads dont after raw fruit/veg touching.

The risk is very small compared to meat, but its still there, also I think we wash a little too much already. A lot of the time we are only washing veg to remove the pesticides from them.

I read a few years ago that rice was the most common cause of food poisoning in the UK. Was mainly due to the takeaways reheated, as you say not cooled down properly and refrigerated but also not heated sufficiently afterwards. Any left over rice after reheating should be disposed and not heated again.

Hope you start to feel better soon OP. Keep hydrated.

No evidence for your last statement, if anything lots to counter it.

You are right in that transmitting enteric pathogens is a big health issue.... But it's about transmitting, that means to another body, not your own, however there is very little danger of self infection. It's been know that eating your own faecal and drinking your own urine has been used for medicinal purposes.

You defend rice and rightly so in the example you use.... Fried the next day. This is done to kill and bacteria developed over night. Secondly those who eat rice daily also develop an immunity to local bacteria found in rice, if it's not part of your regular daily diet it poses a greater threat, which is the case here.

I should have added most common non vegetarian, as chicken is the highest. We have an illness here that will start in June through to September, it's referred to as BBQ Mania. Eating uncooked meet.

"I'm from a Rice eating country in the Americas as one of our main staples!

Secondly those who eat rice daily also develop an immunity to local bacteria found in rice, if it's not part of your regular daily diet it poses a greater threat, which is the case here."

I will just address the eating and drinking your faeces /urine respectively!! that is completely lunacy and sure some people might do that doesn't mean has any medicinal properties it just mean they are abit waky or alot!!! and there is risk involve the bacteria in your gut can happily live there but i wouldnt say its recommended to ingest , and i get your point that you are referring in terms of risk assessment that eating your own faecal matter presents minimal risk compare to eating someone elses! that doesn't mean is risk free and healthy or even medicinal ...

"Could be the beginnings of aids?"
I don't find this remark even remotely amusing or in anyway apt. Why post such a thing ????

I made the comment on rice and it is a warning frequently seen on government food safety sites, so I don't think it is correct to call it mass hysteria. "

Rice is classed as one of the high risk categories in catering. Basic health and hygiene certification that everyone needs to be in the industry now a days is taught that so you are right cassey
