IRELAND HAS BECOME the second country in the world to declare a climate and biodiversity emergency. Ireland’s performance in taking action against climate change was ranked the worst in Europe in a report published in December.
The Climate Change Performance Index ranked Ireland 48th out of 56 countries, with a score of 40.84, far below the EU average of 60.65.
Taoiseach, described Ireland as a “laggard” on the issue and it will miss emission reduction targets and faces significant EU fines.
Great news. I was very surprised at how bad Ireland was.
What are you doing to help reduce your carbon footprint? We can all do more, but what could you d that's reasonable for you?
I now cycle more than before, though this has far less of an impact that many believe. I hardly eat any red meat now knowing that the beef industry is the world's largest atmospheric polluter. This one single industry could have the biggest impact if it reduced it's over output. |

Started recycling as much house hold waste as possible, once a month visit the local centre with recyclables, compost kitchen and garden waste which goes back into fertiliser for the veg garden. Try to grow as much of my own veg as possible to cut down on packaging and waste.
Professionally I fit energy efficient heating systems.
We all have to do as much or as little as we can. |

"I hardly eat any red meat now knowing that the beef industry is the world's largest atmospheric polluter. "
It's not, y'know.
Emmissions by all of agriculture and not just beef fall into third place in most studies.
Energy/heat production is by far the largerst producer of greenhouse gasses, followed by transport and then agriculture.
Sitting in the cold and dark will be much more beneficial than giving up beef. |

The simplest way to reduce our carbon footprint is to invest in wave energy we are a little island in the Atlantic Ocean our west coast is perfect to take advantage of it.
It's also funny that FG are spouting this shite when it was them that raised the tax on E85 (bio ethanol) so much that nowhere sells it. |

I'm not sure wave energy is quite there yet Laid, I believe prototypes are currently being used off the coast of Hawaii ?
Also in the mix are off shore wind turbines which apparently give a 50% greater yield than baseplate types.
Either way I don't think FFFailers or FGfailers have an appetite to persue it |

It's a sound bite from the government. we are the secind worst in Europe for meeting our agreed targets and every time a group like farmers are challenged our government row back on promises made and we pay huge fines. It's depressing how these money hungry fools are decimating our climate with little regard for our children |

Declaring a state of emergency is no good without taking action, European and local elections coming up and I see local politicians saying very little about environmental matters, we need to state investing in sustainable infrastructure, improving or recycling and waste treatment facilities, look at banning plastics, come down hard on environmental legislation/complaints against multinationals and as laid said more renewable energy sources. |

I agree but those are only for CO2 emmissions. There are others that also consider methane emissions. Methane is 32x more destructive than CO2 and that there was an annual increase of 16% last year in methane gas and will increase even more as China and a few other countries continue to increase their beef intake hugely, not taking into account population growths
Most studies in 2017 also found animal agriculture's global methane emissions are 11% higher than previous estimates based on data.
For each degree that Earth's temperature rises, the amount of methane entering the atmosphere from microorganisms dwelling in lake sediment and freshwater wetlands -- the primary sources of the gas -- will increase several times. As temperatures rise, the relative increase of methane emissions will outpace that of carbon dioxide.
Thats not just one or two industries but it'll outpace every industry.
So depends what emmissions the studies are calculating. |

I’ve always been a bit of a nerd but although I feel it would be nice to preserve our planet it’s doomed anyway so the priority should be to move to other planets, this isn’t something that is being worked on in a serious way as far as government budgets are concerned.
The planet will become uninhabitable be it in 10k or 100k years through solar activity or tomorrow from a meteor strike, moving to a (or many) sustainable habitats off earth is the only way to preserve humans. |

No, they're not CO2 emmisions, they're greenhouse gasses in general which includes CO2, methane, nitrous oxide and various others. |

Some people will put this idea down to just madness, like they did when mankind wanted to see what was out pass the big blue sea and people said they would just drop off the edge of the planet, yet they found the America's |

Intense acriculture is not only about emission. Chemicals, drugs and monoculture have a lot to answer for when it comes to water pollution and biodiversity. There was just recently a new study that the earth biodiversity is shrinking at rapidly, just to mention the most frightening is the increasing disappearance of bees. |

One of the main reasons why I’ve quit all dairy, fish and meat produce. The meat and dairy lobby in this country is huge so it will be difficult for any government to tackle the emissions from that sector.
Also bogs are a huge carbon sink yet we’re still destroying them, as much for garden compost as for turf. |

It is indeed. The amount of arable farming required for feeding beef is staggering, the transportation of auxiliary industries associated, water and irrigation. The list rises.
China will be by far the biggest consumer of beef by 2020 at current rates. It's a growing market. |

Load of horse shit.
Just an excuse to tax more and more in the future.
Some of today's modern cars put out more pollutants than a car 29 years ago.
Typical government and eu crap again.
If the government were serious then they would let people recycle for free and not charge for it by privatizing refuse collection. |

Students march about climate change .. what next..
They march about climate change..
try living in my area.. knocked over bins bottles thrown around the place after partying...
I wonder where the party was after the protest march. |

So your line of thought is some students act like idiots when d*unk so none of them should show the maturity, forward thinking and inititive to try and highlight one of the biggest issues facing our future? |

Not really, not to the extent that it needs to be.

The only person and or people that made it more highlighted to this date is David Attenborough and the documentary crew.. |

We could start a fab recycle and reuse thread outlining so of the ingenious ways of reducing waste and reducing the use of chemicals heres so ideas that could help.save the planet
Turn ur jocks inside out and front to bact that will get u four days use saving on washing detergent and fabric softner
Jonnys turned inside out and washed sur that will save on the production of rubber
Feel free to add more

I have seen it in the news more in relation to the students than David Attenborough to be honest...
Point is its a worthwhile protest so I am not sure why your are complaining about it |

David attenborough talks out his ass. He sees his death coming and he wants to try make the world better, but hes talking out his arse.
BBC already admitted that getting rid of all single use plastic will speed up environmental damage. He made a claim fish were putting bubbles around their eggs because of low oxygen levels when its done to stop the eggs being eaten. He blamed dropping water levels in an area on climate change when it was china who built a dam up the river in order to have green energy.
Ireland is a tiny country, go onto https://thetruesize.com/ and drag Ireland down to the equater, maps make us look bigger than we are. We are a tiny spec on the planet and nothing we do matters as the wind system here wont push pollutants up into the high atmosphere like it does in china. |

Might bury a few vegans in the back garden can use their corpses to feed the plants which will help the oul oxygen shortage plus less people taking said oxygen and......bonus prize LESS VEGANS personally I think that's win win win win win |
