I don't actually mind bad spelling when it's obviously a thumb slip or dyslexia. It's the ones who, despite everyone else on the forum spelling something correctly, aren't observant enough to notice and learn, and so, persist in spelling certain things incorrectly or using words incorrectly who bring out my inner grammar dominatrix and make me want to slap them with a ruler

Something like Dyslexia isnt always obvious.

Mistaking words for other simular words or constantly misspelling the same words regardless of seeing the correcting spelling or being repeated constantly can be a sign of other difficulties also.

Well Dyslexia being the obvious one. Someone aware that they have it may not be very obvious as they will have been able to realise certain patterns amd probably spell check most of their posts. But if they are tired, stressed or too rushed to proof read posts could be worse.

Anything that affects someones cognitive function such as ADHD or Dysplaxia can affect a persons ability to recall the spelling or use of "obvious" or common words.

I am sure I not doing the.subject much justice here but there are a vast array of developmental issues that affects someones ability to read and write

I'm very familiar with both ADHD and Dyspraxia... Some of the most intelligent people in the world can't spell some words the way somebody decided in THEIR infinite wisdom was the correct way to spell.

Remember in national school every morning when the teacher drilled the spelling into you? Was / is this some form of control being exerted. I remember seeing kids get six of the best for failing spelling tests. Some went on to be very successful and I'd say they still don't spell like the world expects them to.

Outside of public broadcasting and news media, (just for consistency),Is there a really a rite or rong way to spell if the reader understands the message?

Live a little, I say. Take in the sunshine and breathe

One of mine has dyslexia and social media cuts people very little slack. It takes a huge amount of effort for someone with dyslexia to dicipher words and formulate sentences. Lack of grammar etc does not indicate a lack of intelligence or education in all cases. My job requires a lot of attention to language and writing and it is only now that I have gotten over my bias around this.

Can you understand the message the other person is trying to convey? If you can then what’s the problem?

You’re making an assumption based on very little information. The person posting could have dyslexia or other specific literacy difficulty. They may not be lazy and text speak may be easier for them.

Is the content intelligent or witty, that’s far more telling .

Oh I completely agree that I make assumptions. I don't make them lightly though. My assumptions are a product of experience and training. a spelling error or a bit of text speak, what does that tell you about a person in a negative light? I'm not saying a profile full of text speak or spelling errors that you cant understand it. Just a small bit. It just seems seems to be judging for petty nonsense.

We all make spelling errors ( well actually I don’t because I’m highly intelligent), but some profiles have cataclysmic ( had to check that spelling via google laughing out loud ( lol) lol) amounts of assorted spelling errors. This means they are thick, probably live in social housing, smoke, have SKY, are on the brew, claim DLA and dinner consists of whatever closest on Just eat or whatever it’s called.

I can and do ignore 'small bits'. They don't bother me. It may seem petty to you to be frustrated with people who don't make an effort, but as someone who was diagnosed with dyslexia at a young age, in a time when most people didn't even know the word, and who has spent 40 years checking and double-checking everything I write (thank fuck for the invention of predictive text!), and uses Google or Wiki at least once in every post I make to ensure that I'm using the correct spelling of something or using words in their right context... Yes, I feel entitled to be annoyed about lack of effort when someone mails me, and yes, it does give me insight into our compatibility

as I said small bits and a profile full of it that you cant understand a word are worlds apart. If someone mailed me with a few spelling errors and some text speak, but I still clearly understand what they're saying, would it put me off them? Of course not. They're looks and or how they interact in person are alot more important.
