As I get older I want to remain more active and stay away from the demon drink

I hear muscle tone is important as I move into my elder years

While I don’t have time to bulk up I do have a spare 3 hours a week I can devote to resistance training

Any advice? If I lift light weights in middle relegation 15x3 sets will my muscle tone improve? And how do I avoid the plateau stage?

Also, will the above help me lose a few pounds? I can’t run anymore due to a long standing hip injury from a bad collision playing Gaa football

Not into protein shakes and eating kilos of chicken meat either

As long as you are active and putting some work in you are half way there. Every 5 or 6 weeks you can change your amount of sets and reps and that will help with plateau.

Resistance training will deffo help with bone density, osteoporosis and sarcopenia

Toning up is building muscle and losing body fat. Not to get big muscles(hypertrophy) but build strength work

Muscle building is a signalling response which responds to progress to training but also to food

Training wise if only 3 times a week I'd say full body workout is fine. While progressing will be more reps or more weight

Food plays a part. Which is protein , building blocks of muscle and the body.

So think about 2 ways of doing, protein source at every meal or more specific 1-1.2g per kg of your bodyweight. As we get older it's more important and helps the body respond in right way

This will help health and toning up.

Just make sure you are in a calorie deficit if you need to shift a bit of body fat too

Hope that helps

Get to a gym get good advice on what exercises etc you need to be doing, they will advise what reps and weights to be lifting. And after few weeks they reassess and change reps etc up to avoid the plateau

Download the app 5x5 Stronglifts. You do 3 exercises\day 3 times a week. It increases strength and muscle tone. No crazy moves that'll affect weak joints. Been doing it for weeks now. It's simple and effective.

If time is the issue then buy a skipping rope and do 20 minutes every 2 days. The in between days use the ab wheel. Total body workout in your own house!

Gyms are over rated

How are gyms overrated?

Bodyweight exercises are amazing but if he can't do many push ups or a chin up wouldn't some dumbbells, barbell or some machines help him get stronger and stimulate the muscles

Gyms have a place wether it's a commercial or even better a semi private facility which can help people train safe
