Speaking to a friend today and the topic of interview came up (he's going for one). Here's the question. If you were an interviewer and a person turned up dressed really well but had a tattoo and some facial hair, would it put you off them immediately?

No, once they were neat and tidy. If the tattoo was in their face that would be different I think. I’d have more of a problem with bitten nails tbh.

No, I'm interviewing them for a job, not a shag. If they are clean and well-presented, then the tattoos and facial hair don't matter overall.

I think your interview and dress sense should be more important. Facial hair should have nothing to do with you and your ability to do a job.

It shouldn't matter really if the person is neat and tidy. I think society is a lot more open to tattoos these days.

But like anything appearance related I guess your at the mercy of others opinions.

Personally....neither would make any difference as far as first impressions are concerned, but I’ve been on a panel where somebody who had facial tattoos presented for interview, and it did impact on the grading they got from other panelists, under suitability for the role.

Well ... depends on facial hair. If it's neat and trimmed i.e. looking professional and sharp - then happy days.

If it's a hot mess of a patchy, curly half beard - it would raise a question or two.

(Obviously depending on a job that the person is getting interviewed for).

Tattoos - as long as it's not swastikas or any kind of other offensive signs shouldn't really matter.

At an interview, appearance is important. Suited and booted.. And well groomed.. would create a favourable impression. Many employers don't wasn't staff with visible tattoos (cabin crew).

Unfortunately a lot of people go on appearance. Me... if I was interviewing then no. Unless person was untidy. For me it would be their ability to do the job .

The thing with interviews is that you're trying to sell yourself essentially. Jobs are in demand, you're not.

Having said that, personally all I would look for is that at least some effort was made in showing enthusiasm and personality would be the major factor. Tattoos, hairstyle, piercings etc would have no bearing on my decision. Some of the coolest, soundest and most honest people I know are people with 'alternative' tastes and styles.

Actually, it's the people that go over the top with the suits, shoes, tidy hair and clean shaved that I tend to not trust.

I regularly interview people....personally as long as the person is half way presentable I don't care how they are dressed or whether they have facial hair, tattoos etc. Obviously if they look shocking that would go against them but it's more do they have a can do attitude, good communication skills and the experience or smarts that I'm looking for.

I interview regularly also(I am a man with tattoos) first and foremost presentation and qualifications taken precedence. But if a tattoo is on show and is hard to hide as a point of contact for the company I would have to consider the tattoo.

If it’s on the neck face or Hand- my hands would be tied I couldn’t offer a job(Business is Finance)

In the engineering sector here. Tatts and beards are fine as long as the person doesn't have bits in there beard etc. (I.e like personal hygiene issues) it wouldn't even be taken into consideration.

To be clear the crowd I work for, our engineers have a lot of public engagement. Can't see any reason it would be a problem. Certainly in my line of work anyway.

I always cover my tattoos at work

But I remember seeing interview notes a previous boss had taken and he was quite unnerved by my choice off hair colour...So am aware of that too now

Im interviewer now as well and what really matters is an attitude and willing to work and travel and also understanding the role. Of course physical appearance is important too.

It really depends what kind of role it is and for some people piercing and visible tattoos are a big no no...

Bad teeth kill it for me! Beards, tattoos, piercings have absolutely no bearing on someone that sits in front of me. Socially everything is acceptable but first impressions mean a lot when you're sending somebody to represent you in a person's home, just my own thing is that if I've somebody working for me turning up at your door. A set of black or broken teeth (in my opinion) draws the client away from whether they're the best tradesperson in the country! Personal hygiene and looking after yourself sets the tone if you get me? Just my thoughts on it.

In all seriousness, I used to interview people quite a bit. General cleanliness, respectable appearance were basics. Engaging personality and a visible desire for the job and what they could do in it were paramount. Qualifications were relevant but experience and foresight were more important.

Ha spot on John!!! Snowflake generation has the industry fucked. But definitely a desire to do the job and what they'll bring with them are being lost! Me da told me to come for an interview cause he said his mates in the trade....

One or two but luckily one had the grá for the job and the wit to handle it.

The other one was just a poseur and is still job hunting
