Do you like target rifle?? Thinking about getting a rifle, Mainly pheasant and woodcock hunting for me. I mostly fish for trout with a couple of days on the river for salmon thrown in, and maybe one or two local pike comps a year!! And a days mackrel fishing for the freezer

What’s the point in shooting something and it can’t shoot back ? Very one sided affair

Well when I used to shoot rabbits, crows, gulls, foxes etc it was more for pest control. But anything I shot that was edible rabbits duck pheasant etc was eaten. Wild fame is one of the healthiest meats going.

I don’t get shooting, our wildlife is becoming scarce. What skill is there in shooting anything with a shotgun ? How many animals get injured by these and aren’t picked up and left to suffer.

Pointless in my opinion.

It's about population control and it's a numbers game.

Lets take the fox as an example, their habitat has been vastly reduced, it's awful and sad but unless you want to move out of your house and give it to the foxes it's done.

You then have two choices left:

1. Leave them be, don't hunt them and let them breed away as they please. Result? They will attack livestock and even babies in extreme cases as there just isn't enough food, you get a population of starving and prone to disease animals who eventually die off.

2. Control the population through hunting with rifles. Result? You have fewer animals but they have enough to eat and you therefor have a healthier stock to breed.

It's either have lots of sick foxes who create sick offspring or a smaller number of healthy foxes with healthy offspring.

Yes Humans took their land but that's done and ignoring the p_oblem because foxes are cute and you think they shouldn't be controlled is doing them no favours.

I have rescued a number of wildfowl that have been injured by shotgun pellets and left badly injured and wounded for days by hunters.

Is this humane or part of the great sport of shooting and hunting ?!

Is the barbaric shooting of thousands migrant birds in Malta and Greece acceptable then , regardless of species ?

It’s like anything, if you don’t like it just don’t do it. If you don’t like others doing it try to vote to get it banned. I’ll hunt as long as it’s legal. It’s a skill and a nessecary way of controlling vermin.

The main reason I took up hunting is so that no matter what happens to the government or civil authority in a time of crisis I can ensure my family is well fed. I can hunt in a field behind my home if I need to!

Ive also had to put deer out of their misery after they have been hit by cars and left on the road to die!! Which is worse in my opinion!!

Lol 400 euro per carcass

Are they made of gold???

My family farm in wexford and wicklow..

Maybe, seen as you know everything, tell me this

20 deer will eat as much grass as 20 sheep

How am I meant to make a living if I let the deer eat all the grass..

Maybe ill sell all my sheep

Go on the dole

And look out at the deer all day

I never sold a deer carcass in my life

If that adds to your enjoyment

Then I'm up for it

Id be a townie who moved to the country. I spent 3 and a half years as a vegetarian for ethical reasons. Now I hunt and fish and I feel much more justified in eating and feeding meat to my child as I know where it came from, that it was killed humanely and that it lived its life as nature intended.

Hunting is not easy you have to work for your food, that adds great value and conscience to life.

Just my opinion lol

How could I get into hunting? I have no interest in killing fox’s or other so called vermin. What I’m Interested in is hunting game. I like knowing where my meat comes from and where better than to source it myself.

Any advice on how to get started would be greatly appreciated

I don't know about gun laws up north but you'd probably have to start with land either your own or some that you have permission to shoot on, join a gun club/shooting club etc

Hi there

You need written permission off a farmer that has deer on his land

You need to apply for a deer hunters licence

Then apply for a deer caliber rifle

If you intend hunting on coillte forest

Then you need to do the

HCAP exam

Quite easy to pass

Then try get onto a coillte lease

A decent rifle and scope

Camo gear

And your away

Hope this is of some help

It's rarely proper hunting, more like culling animals on your own land or a friends land.

Not like other places with hunting seasons and you get your gun and go off into the _ilderness.

That said a girl refused to date me because I killed a fish when I was in primary school. She said it was barbaric.

The mentality of the anti hunter is, they are pro abortion, they eat eggs, and killing an animal is disgusting. Basically they are just devoid of logic.

We do have hunting seasons in this country the only reason why you can't just go off into the _ilderness is we don't have "_ilderness" in this country most land in this country is privately owned. You can apply to shoot some state lands but it's tough and expensive and mostly just for deer. You can also apply for a foreshore licence and hunt duck on lakes etc

Still a bit early I think - once the sand eels come in and you see the birds picking them off - that’s when I start filling the freezer with mackerel for pike bait

Kilmore is easy pickings for mackerel though. I've probably foul-hooked more there than I've actually properly hooked anywhere else

The big D

I’m an animal lover, well not lover, I admire them from a far so altho I dont agree with hunting I do respect it. I do think that majority of hunters are professional & go for quick kill & produce rather than for 100%pleasure & to torture. Years ago a neighbour hunter brought home abt 10 rabbits all tied together & walking by me he purposely for d laugh walked my me & rubbed them on my head, I had nightmares for ages, I was only a kid & he was a prick.

Love waking up the first Sunday of September and hearing the hunters' guns. It's one of those comfortingly reliable markers of the change of seasons. On the downside, my fishing season is almost done. Nearly time to bring the boat in for Winter.
