As an uncle to a 13 year old nephew who thinks he knows it all when it comes to the ladies now that he has moved to secondary. So had his Christmas present got and said I’d get his a few light hearted extras
So this evening picked him up his first Gillette razor , a little bottle of durex play lube and 4 bottles of miller.
His mother will probably kill me but she will see the funny side |

Ah look maybe I am completely missing the joke or I am just a really boring prude but it seems a really bad idea.
Your clearly the cool uncle who he respects and looks up to. If you give him that as a present, even as a joke, that is what he sill start aspiring to as cool at 13.
I know he may joke and brag butvhe is still at a very vunerable and impressionable age.
As I said tho I could be completely over analaysing it I dont have kids |

At 13 nowadays (not sounding like an aul fart) they are so much more advanced but agree the bottles of beer I would take back straight away but that 13yr old will go to that uncle with problems or issues as he will feel he can trust him ... good cop bad cop scenario |

That’s it good cop bad cop.
He owes the drink press at home 2-3 bottles back anyway so he wount be allowed to keep them all.
Little brat had borrowed 1 bottle a few weeks ago. Had disposed of bottle discreetly but threw the cap in his bedroom bin and his mother /my sister caught him
Sure he would want me to buy him red bull and he takes a slug and the rest is fucked down the sink. |

I would do anything for my 2 nephews and 1 niece within reason. I know well what will be done. He will go pure red with the durex but it’s more about opening up conversation. And the beer he will be allowed have 1 but he will tip 80% down the sink and other 3 be left behind. I bought him 4 not 20 box.
His dad walked out on him 8/9 years ago and we talk loads but 1st year in secondary school and moving to a different county during summer has been massive for him along with his granny/my mother passed away last Christmas so worried he is bottling up emotions

Then talk to him, don't give him booze. He's 13,teaching kids that drink is the way to be cool or to deal with their problems is so not a good idea. |

" I’m 100% with you op .. as I said I talked to nobody but my aunt who used to do stuff like this and my son did the same with his aunt and uncle and they always kept me in the loop and if I was worried about anything I’d get them to suss it out for me. Everyone has different views but this has worked for me |

Then maybe just talk to him. By giving gifts like that to him you are unconsciously putting pressure on him, in terms of what he thinks the men in his life think he should be doing.
Would you give beer and lube to your 13 year old niece? I doubt it. You shouldn’t to him either. |

"He’s 13. All well and good being a “cool” uncle but grow up and cop on."
I’m far from cool and my professional are seen as the most boring of all boring professions.
But Im there for him as an uncle and grown up and I teaching him valves likes hard work , education , valuing and respecting himself etc
Btw I didn’t drink till I was almost 17 and was supervised. I hardly ever drink now and never had a bad relationship with alcohol except an odd hangover |

Everyone allowed their opinion.
Very advanced and scares me how much he knows since 11/12 compared to what I knew a little over 20 years ago. He will openly admit in a sneering wayto having “alone time “ to me and his mother.
But sneering or not he is talking about it.
Last year after our family bereavement he was able to tell us how he felt and emotions so being open is of benefit.
We need to talk to teenagers now a days. I mean talk. Campaigns like “it’s ok to not be ok” isn’t worth a fiddlers feck without people being able to talk. And teenagers boys do not talk as openly as teenager girls and look who suffers a higher rate of self harm, mental health issues and other taboo issues. |

Fully agree with these sentiments, however did it occur to you that presenting the proposed gifts to this child could pressure him into adult activities? |

Surely you could find another way to tease him. Buying a child and yes hes a child is not only dangerous but illegal. You're giving him permission to drink. A 13yr olds body is not equipped to deal with alcohol at all!! As for the lube I despair. If my brother did this, there would be one less at the Christmas gathering for sure. |

No pressure from me. And better to talk about it to us than feel pressure And be unequiped in time when peer pressure |

Agree 100% here.
If you can speak so well and be as aware as above then I dont think you need the inapproprate presents to open the conversation with him.
Just be there and talk to him as you are. With all his losses he probably needs a steady male adult figure not a banter buddy.
Introducing alchohol and sexual aids wont add anymore to your ability to support him.

The bottle will be 2 mouthfuls at most. I know the lad. He would sometimes take a beer out if fridge for me if we had been doing DIY together (20 bottles of Heineken would do me a year) and he takes the cap off and takes a slug. 9/10 times it’s not a positive reaction he gives. So illegal to purchase yes but in reality that’s an outdated law in ROI especially after the last 2 massive votes in Ireland.

I dont recall any votes on the idea of legalising alcohol for children. Do what you will OP, at least do your sister the courtesy of letting her know in advance, ultimately it's her child and her opinion surely counts? |

"Two mouthfuls at most"
That kinda sounds like the first couple of pulls on a cigarette at the back of the bike shed at school and you coughed and spluttered and threw it away and said you'd never smoke and within a week you were hooked.
Grow the fuck up yourself first!

A 13yr olds body is not equipped to deal with alcohol at all!! As for the lube I despair. If my brother did this, there would be one less at the Christmas gathering for sure.
Ahh that's ok so. "
Haha. Now I’m worried if your being sarcastic or not. Lol |

"Two mouthfuls at most"
That kinda sounds like the first couple of pulls on a cigarette at the back of the bike shed at school and you coughed and spluttered and threw it away and said you'd never smoke and within a week you were hooked.
Both my parents use to smoke (and quiet) but I never smoked ever and that includes any illegal substance
Just because you try something does not mean you have to become addicted.

Ya but stealing beers is an escalation from having 1 or 2 sips off a beer and pouring the rest away. He is 13 and developing and going through a few situations that are harder than most deal with. So you encouraging alchohol and thats what you are doing conciously or not by even jokingly giving him a few bottles as a present will only add negitave pressure and influance.
Ill leave it there too as we are going in circles now |

Condoms?
Sorry,my bad .
Still be horrifed at beer and lube ,at such a young age .Im aware kids are way more advanced these days but come on !!
Ofcourse we must encourage our young people to open up and talk more but there's enough presure on them from friends and society to grow up way too early -jesus let them just be kids !! |

It's a rather uncool present imo. Similar to the parenting thread we had last week it's adults trying to be best pals with kids rather than being a guidance.
Giving drink to a 13 year old even as a joke is just all wrong. You might as well throw in a smoke.
As for the lube, condoms would be more appropriate, at least the message of safe sex comes in.
If I were you, I'd scrap the whole idea and take the nephew to a good music gig or sports event which will be a way more memorable experience... |

The scary thing in this country is the probability that there are many Irish uncle's who would think such a joke gift is a great laugh altogether....

If anyone offered any of my kids condoms at any age below 17 i would have them hung and drawn.
That's for parents guardians to do. Teach them respect and understanding not make it a "cool" thing to do or be.
Your basically giving them permission to break the law. And if caught fucked up for life.
Sorry for me being a prude. But "cop on" please

I do not think that it is funny or appropriate to give a 13 year old presents like that. I am a parent and even if i was not i would still not agree with it.
You say that your nephew has had some losses and changes recently...well then just be there for him. Just be straight up and talk to him...you dont need props to have a conversation or to be there for him. |

Talk to him and be the adult he needs. Don't gift him condoms and treat him like some sort of divergent.
I think it's disingenuous to depreciate campaigns like 'It's okay not to be' versus your own approach, which I find tactless to be honest.
It's great if he talks to you, but be the adult, earn the trust, don't be the guy who buys hm cans when he's too young, where will that get him?

So enough time to google some facts to back you up but not to actually make sure they were right. And then correct other posters for misquoting you.
Gotcha

I’ve a son around that age and believe me if they want condoms they’ll find them themselves. Loves getting aftershave and the wash bag sets though but maybe a ticket to a match or something that you both can go to together might go down better if you want to be the cool uncle. |

We go to many a match but not really any tickets for sale for upcoming ones he would be interested in. I bring him because it’s good to see how large crowds behave and also being out in Dublin after normal hours. It would be 10pm leaving Aviva sometimes
Aftershave he likes but it’s an odd trip to the local car wash he needs. A lynx Africa shower is his favourite

We don't live in Spain or other European. Yes the Irish have problems with drink but show me country that doesn't. Speaking from experience here exposing a child to alcohol at such a young age can lead to a big down fall. What if he were to get addicted to alcohol or drinking alcohol leads to depression for him? |

So this evening picked him up his first Gillette razor , a little bottle of durex play lube and 4 bottles of miller.
His mother will probably kill me but she will see the funny side "

There's a big red flag here called consent.
The boy is 13 and can't consent.
You haven't asked his mother whether she's ok with it. If she is then fine. It's her call she knows her own child best and no one reading can second guess her. If she hasn't okayed it you are totally wrong.
The notion that it will get him talking or get a laugh by embarrassing him is total shite.
The kid will talk when he wants to talk. Not when you decide he should.
And if you want to get a laugh for your extended family Christmas day here's a suggestion. Find something that they can laugh at you about. Not a child.
No. No. No. |

Really? I get that you are probably trying to be the cool uncle etc but I would be disgusted if anyone in my family gave this to any of my children.

"As an uncle to a 13 year old nephew who thinks he knows it all when it comes to the ladies now that he has moved to secondary. So had his Christmas present got and said I’d get his a few light hearted extras
So this evening picked him up his first Gillette razor , a little bottle of durex play lube and 4 bottles of miller.
His mother will probably kill me but she will see the funny side "
“Funny side”??
You sound creepy as fuck.
If one of my kids’ uncles bought my son lube etc I’d tear their fucking head off.... |
