"I recently went for a STD/STI test and thought I would share my experience - might encourage others to go if they haven't. Step 1. Phoned GUM clinic in Cork South Infirmary for a free STI checkup and was given a patient number and an appointment for 3 weeks later was told not to pee for 4hrs before appointment. Step 2. Turned up, gave number and DOB and sat in large waiting room for about 15mins. Then called for a 2 min interview on sexual history and asked to give a urine sample by peeing into small container in the loo. Back to waiting room for about 5mins and then called again to be examined. Was shown into a small room with a bench and asked to pull boxers to my knees and lie back on the bench. Two female staff then took a swab from inside the tip of my penis. (I presume they checked around my genitals for abnormalities at this time too) They then asked me to dress and a minute later a separate nurse came and took a blood sample from my arm. Back to the waiting room for about 10mins and then called to be given a quick result (clear) (not sure if from swab or urine) for signs of any infection. Then I was asked to make another appointment for a week later for blood test results and went home. Step 3. A week later I was back for my results (waiting room seemed busier - 20ish peeps) so was waiting nearly 30 mins to be called. Nurse/doc was very methodical in checking name, DOB, patient number and went through pages and pages of results for the different sti tests. Heart skipped a beat for a second when she mention a positive result but immediately went on to explain it was for receiving a hepatius vaccine which I had done a few years ago for travel. And that was the end of the testing and home I went with the knowledge I have no infections detected. (I believe HIV needs another test 3 months later to be clear) Thoughts: Thankful to be able to avail of this service. It's 100% free Staff professional and courteous Gives great peace of mind Shame it takes 3 weeks for an app. Had to take time off work twice. Not a fan of penis being swabbed " was at the same clinic last month and they did all the tests too , great service , had to go back after 2 weeks for blood results but unfortunately my sample was thrown away by mistake, rarely happens , so another sample was taken and a week later they rang me with results , all tests clear , would highly recemend then , very discreet and very professional , will be going back for regular check ups there mrs crazy

"Wish everyone would have a routine check then we may have a chance to slow the spread faster." We just need better education about sex now we are a multicultural society and are increasingly exposed to greater odds of STD than we were when we were more insular. What was low risk in Ireland should now be considered medium etc.
