Drivers are so bad to I seen a woman on her bike on Roundabout and a driver changed his mind in his direction at the last minute. He nearly blew her into next week. I mean the road is everyone's to share equally. The majority of bike paths I have come across are a big joke. The surfacing is shocking liable for a fall actually. Then they end if the middle of no where lol. |

Get down off your bike, cyclists are a hazard on the road. Do they pay road tax like motorists do? But yet they think they own it, and cycle all over the road when there's no cycle path. Start paying road tax |

That’s true but cyclists are just as wreckless. I travel up and down the quays every morning and evening and the amount of cyclists they take silly risks is actually staggering. Weaving in and out of lanes, even between buses! I’m actually surprised there aren’t more deaths on our roads. |

I do completely agree here. It certainly isn't one way as many would have us believe.
And DG you're right it's called motor tax. Pays for the road systems and upkeep. Maybe the name needs to be changed... Road users Tax? I am one who believes anyone using the road network should be liable the same as anyone else. And they must have insurance by law as motorists too. |

It's based on CO2 emission and weight. How would a bicycle compare to that? You might as well tax pedestrians for crossing the road. |

Well there's indirect emissions ie. the amount of CO2 needed to produce the bike and it's component parts, the CO2 from the truck that delivered the bike to the shop etc.. you also have the maintenances upkeep of a bike etc.. which has indirect emissions too
While it is realistically impossible to tax you could instead insist that cyclists go on an annual road safety awareness course and there might be few accidents |

Which is mostly bs as mpg isn't taken into consideration...ie the actual distance covered. It's all fudged by how good the ERG system is which collects the emissions prior to exhaust outlet where the test is is done. The VAG group showed the world how easy it is to fudge these.
There are may cars with high tax that have higher emmissions and far superior mpg that some with lower emissions and lower mpg.
As you say it's about emissions test yes... However in comment I refered it to consider it as a 'users' road tax which then would be a fairer system for all concerned. This then would also give more credence to a voice from those who do not pay tax. |

"Nobody pay tax to cycle be like the water charges no go "
Different issue but I still maintain they should as a road user. Nothing is free and if you use then help to pay and maintain.
I may be wrong but think the water charges was something different. It was a different way to pay and for a few politicians to get more money and a way for some to benefit even more for companies they were associated with. That's how I saw it anyway but might be wrong. |

I agree with the inequality in itself regarding the motortax but not with taxing the cyclists. The road usage is miniscule in comparison to motorised vehicles and I'm not aware of a country taxing cyclists. Especially in context to global warming and CO2 emission it would make no sense whatoever to disencourage people to use the bike instead of the car. There's actually tax incentives to get people on the bike. |

You need to pass a test to drive a car yet any gobshite can buy a bike and cycle it on roads without any knowledge of rules of the roads. There should be some system in place to correct this.
The amount of cyclist's that just ignore lights and junctions you'd think they are indestructible |

Same old arguments, there’s no road tax, that was abolished in 1937, it’s an emissions tax. Cyclist do not produce emissions, so they don’t pay anything. |

I agree but I haven no idea how that could be enforced. And it’s even worse than that as you can just use the Dublin bike scheme and not even have a helmet |

What has a bicycle ever done for you?
They have a very small manufacturing footprint compared to a car.
Produce no meaningful pollution.
Help people lose weight and keep healthy.
You could accomodate the homeless population with the space given over to car parks. Plus they dont kill a couple of hundred people each year |

Like many in here you're neither replying to the OP or just defending a cyclist... Much of this post has been about behaviour on the road. I'd disagree with the deaths stats though. Many cyclist deaths are due to their stupidity and or disregard to other users much like crossing the road but looking the wrong way saying the car should have seen me. Many have suggested reasonable arguments for equality on the roads by contribution and even licencing. The latter would save many lives imo by instilling bit more responsibility in cyclists.
Ideal world would be to separate them so they had their own routes and maybe pay for it.
Nothing is free and if everyone left their cars and motorised transport for bikes the government would have to take sever cuts that everyone would be up in arms complaining or regain the lost revenue by taxing the air you breath as we all cycle around. |

There were in fact 6 cyclist deaths thus far in 2018, four of these deaths involved lorries and a bus. 1 involved a collission with a car, and one fell off his bike, maybe this is the stupidity piece you refer to, with disregard to his own life |

This country is a far cry from the scenario described and everyone with some economic sense would realise that the inforcement of such tax would cost more than the tax intake. The whole idea is absurd. With a shit public transport system like Ireland's everyone who is brave enough to cycle and leave the car at home should be applauded. |

Being motorbike lovers ourselves my pet peeve is seeing inexperienced bikers not claiming their space on the road but kind of hovering between the lanes. It’s disconcerting for car drivers and so dangerous and sadly it’s usually the young bikers who are guilty of this! Whether you are biking on a motor bike or cycle, lessons never go amiss |

Also people just use them for standing having a chat etc no respect for cyclists using them. Cars, lorry etc use them also just parking up on them. It is funny motorists giving out about cyclists when they are not looking at the bigger picture of the whole cycle path set up. I have often nearly when flying off my bike of people and vehicles using the "cycle" lanes. I am a motorist to and can look at it from both sides. I do agree there are dangerous cyclists also taking risks etc. |

Lol good idea. Earlier in this thread it was mentioned about cyclist weaving in and out lanes. Doesn't a cyclist have a right to change lane just as much as a car does?. Oh maybe it is over the whole tax thing lol. Stop the lights here ha ha. Vehicles do not give room for cyclist to get by or some are so bad they purposely pull out in your way to block you off. Sad world really |

You know what, you should see it for yourself someday in Dublin so. I’m talking about in between double decker buses here because some cyclists are so bloody impatient. Not all of them, some. Also agree with a point above and a lot of cyclists disregard the basic rules of the road like breaking red lights. |

The press have fuelled this cyclists vs drivers crap and the public have rowed in behind it, its just down to selfish pricks irrespective of which means of transport that are causing the issues... |

" I’m talking about breaking red lights here - doesn’t happen too often with motorists. I see it with cyclists everyday by a lot of them "
The legislation is in place, cyclists have to adhere to the same rules of the road, as motor vehicles, unfortunately, these laws are not enforced. if they were, im sure you would see a significant change of behaviour from cyclists.. |

It doesn't happen to often so it's ok then? I think people could talk all day about this topic but in my opinion bottom line is alot motorists do not like cyclists and blame them for all the stuff that motorists do on the roads also. And nothing about motorists and people using the cycle lanes unnecessarily. Plus motorists getting a fright over not observing the road probably then sound the horn loud which can cause a cyclist a fright and accident. |

When did I say it was ok? All I said was that cyclists seem to do it a lot more than motorists. I stated earlier that both motorists and cyclists can be wreckless. You just seem to be of the opinion that it’s all down to the motorist. |

"I'm out on my bicycle in the next hour, so keep a good distance and don't honk at my ass "
Be careful doghunter, that bike symbol on the road, is not to indicate a bike lane. it just indicates where another cyclist got squashed |

"What has a bicycle ever done for you?
They have a very small manufacturing footprint compared to a car.
Produce no meaningful pollution.
Help people lose weight and keep healthy.
You could accomodate the homeless population with the space given over to car parks. Plus they dont kill a couple of hundred people each year
Like many in here you're neither replying to the OP or just defending a cyclist...
1 involved a collission with a car, and one fell off his bike, maybe this is the stupidity piece you refer to, with disregard to his own life "
Dont follow your reply? I'm guessing you've picked out something mentioned that wasn't the point of my comment and used some stats but don't follow what you're trying to say. |

Seems reasonable discussion isn't the forté of many in the Irish forum. So many feel it's about being right or defend their rights even if it has little or anything about what the previous comment said.
This isn't about them or us as most use both means of transport. It's about understanding the need to be respectful to the road rules and towards others on the road. Some were giving suggestions as to possible long term solutions which most cyclists seemed to take offence as many feeling they were being attacked.
There's an element of ignorance towards others who comment on the Irish forum if they hold a different position.
Stop taking everything as a personal attack but rather they may disagree with what you think without it being personal at all.
Leaving this discussion. Hope you all survive like me. I was taken out by a car 4 weeks ago and lay in hospital with 7 broken ribs, collapsed lung, and had to have surgery on my right thumb. I was very lucky. Maybe some of you might what to reread what I've been saying in the light of that.
So you were knocked off your bike... Lucky you |

"I know how you feel, a guy tried once to rob my bike under my arse in broad daylight. Thank goodness my ass has a tight grip. "
