Can't wait for the kiddies to start school. Finally some peace. On a serious note how do they call it free education ? Granted I have 3 starting jr infants together but when I broke down the cost for each it's actually shocking. When they start next week I still have to give the teacher money. It's crazy. Does anyone else find the same ?

Don’t envy you with three starting at same time. Hate to say it only get more expensive as they get older I have three spread across primary, secondary and college. Need a mortgage just to cover cost

Excuse my ignorance, I dont have kiddos. What do you have to pay the teacher for? Also are there actual school fees or is it just the cost of uniforms, books etc....

Book rental(even though I've already bought books) art supplies, photocopying. Never mind the cost of schoolboys, lunch boxes, pencil cases. School uniform which can only be bought in one place with crests. It's a joke.

And dont forget the ‘voluntary’ contribution. I know the schools have budgets to stick to and try their best. We need to spend more on education and less on tribunals and papal visits. Sorry getting off topic.

Best of luck with the little ones first day! X

The back to school stuff seems a reasonable expense for a parent to pay for, but paying for the schools supplies is a bit much alright.

Fyi Id avoid buying a schoolboy probably not legal

Irish triplets OP??

There's definitely an upswing (no pun etc) in the fun when the kids go back to school. I've too many years of "free" education behind me to bother giving out about it at this stage.

That said, much cheaper than childcare....

Why would you buy books if there's a book rental scheme in place. My kids are way past that stage, but i was on the parents scheme that started a book rental. I still help out. Every year when the kids start back their books including all copies are covered with their names on it on a desk ready for them. €49 for a first class student.

peninsula

Was astonished at how much it cost for each child going back in Dublin , books for each subject, copybooks, stationary, Art and Technology subsidy and sure there was more. In Northern Ireland, no books, copybooks etc are paid for, free homework diary although increasingly been asked to pay small cost of practical subjects, cost comparison between South and North is unreal.

Yes I have triplets. I'd do anything for them. The money side of it doesn't matter. I was just generally shocked by how much it all cost. It's far from free education.

You’re right, it’s not about the money and it’s about giving them the best start in life. It will all be worth it in the end.

Took long enough to have them so will definitely be with it.
