Went to a lovely local 5k race tonight, first half was a gentle climb, second half was a gentle decent all the ways to the finish, did a little over 24mins, the usual feed of tea and sambos afterwards was great.

Just signed up for a 10k in howth in October and a 10 mile in Killarney at the end of sept with a goal of doing the Waterford half in December. Did it last year and loved it. Was out of action with my Achilles for the last while so am easing back into it. Did first run last night in about a month

Had planned another 3/4 mile at fast pace today but legs are far too sore from yesterday. Not risking it with 1/2 marathon up next week. Rest for me

Ur only a baby

Don’t forget to fome roll them

And it’s like going gym ur always stiff for frist week same as running

Just make sure u run and don’t go 3 days with running , and always run next day after ur long run , then rest day after that ,

Mate of mine doing his first too, you'll be doing a full before you know it and going to bed early on Friday nights ahead of 20 mile runs like I'm doing tonight

Only seeing this thread now. Been back running last 4 months, started the park runs too, still not cracked 30 mins but every run has involved a 'few' pints the night before so I imagine a night off it I'd be fit for 28 and under as during the week I'm able to keep up with the more serious runners for a good part of the run and usually near the front of 800/400m runs. Just hit the brick wall around 2mile and the head isn't in it to keep going if during a park run I lose everyone else.

Did a muscle or nerve in the lower back 10days when put running so sitting out the local 5/10k tonight :/. Had been hoping to move up to 10's by now as started moving up to 4/5mile with only one or two breaks.

Anyone good tip for exercises for the lower back? Taking at least the next week off to rest it as well.

Pilates is great for that, but if you don't have the time ect look up Bridge exercises, they are good.

Ur deffo going out way to fast in the park runs

U have to run at ur pace and only ur pace ,

U are way better off starting slower and work into the race , it doesn’t not matter what times we all do but principles are same for everyone ,

U have to build up a level off fittest , just try get 3/4 runs in aweek if u can , short and long ones

Again everyone’s long runs are different so if ur starting out ur long run could be 4/5 mile , build up slowly , enjoy ??

That's the problem, I very been trying to go slow, just lowering my natural pace but when I check my stats after I'm actually going a lot quicker (trust me it's not intentional), so during the practice runs I'm purposely hanging at the back of the group but feel absolutely fkd a lot quicker

Yea every has that problem going out to fast in a race , so 30 min 5 km is 9;40 a mile so just run and keep looking at ur watch don’t go faster than 9;40

So done my 20 today, had the usual calf issues but I'll be living with them until the marathon is done at this stage, was good to feel comfortable aside from that for once, was up early and shattered now, easy run tomorrow and will take Monday off to rest up.

I'm planning on coming out of marathon retirement next year to run the new Belfast course but will be looking more around 4hrs (did Dublin last year in 3:36 but there was a lot of training out in for that and I don't intend to get to beat that and just enjoy it)

There was a long uphill between miles 10 and 13 but I enjoyed it as it allowed for a breather but there were loads of areas around industrial estates where there was no support so very disheartening

Suntimes when ur legs are tired it’s really good to do short stuff , like 100s 200s , really fast , just do 3 or 4 it shocks the legs into action , it’s very good
