At the moment I walk over 10km, 6 days a week and try to get 3 10km runs in most weeks, my biggest problem is getting in enough recovery time, always have sore feet! Cold water, spikey ball, foot rubs all help, magnesium and glucosemine too and wearing different shoes everyday.

Tomorrow anything past 15k will be a victory. Aim to be up to 20k start of September. Doing 5k Tuesday, 10k Wednesday,5k Thursday.

Question???? Anyone have a particular brand of runners they wear??? Or running habits?? I find it very difficult to run without music.

I really like pumas but they're hard to find, I've a new pair of asics, they're great but I'm burning through them, they won't last 3 months.

I like music too and a lot of races music is banned so for those races I think about my breathing, if I'm running slow i take 3 steps for every exhale/inhale and if I'm going faster its 2 steps per breath

Got into podcast myself last time I was training. Guardian football weekly was a life saver

What types of Asics you have??? I mostly wear kayano(found them really durable) but went for mizuno for last marathon and was very happy with them.

Breathing is interesting, may try andfind focus more on that going forward.

I had a thread up about podcast about 3/4 days ago, people posted some great ones, worth a look.

I think they are GT2000, I've the toe area worn out and the rubber sole is already showing signs of wear, I've for them 2 months. I'd normally have 2 or 3 pairs of runners and I'd swap between them but only one pair would always be my race shoes

Yes he is a motivational speaker also he started it all initially to loose weight. Was to carry on to make history not once but twice . 32 marathons in 32 days then 10 Ironmans in 10 days .

Set goals. Plan routes that are loops meaning you have to come back otherwise it's a long walk. Run with others or load good music

I've a few halfs done too but I find the full just too much training, pain and effort, takes the fun out of it for me, plus I hate the recovery time needed and I'd like to still have a life besides running!!

Careful of beetroot, it's full of iron, which is great but there's a huge amount of people(something like 25% of western world population, including myself) have Hemochromatosis so just make sure you're OK to eat it first

Lol, ah the Guinness is grand! There's a few different versions of it,sufferers, carries, people in between, you'll know if you have it cause your bones will ache and you'll be super tired, giving blood helps remove excess iron and its for a good cause

I have a love hate relationship with running. Hate road running but throw in obstacles of the like that tough mudder, hell and back and tough guy add into there 10 - 12 mile runs and I'm there in a shot. Have a lot of respect for those that run marathons but there not for me.

I did a mud run once (came 4th!) and as I was running up a river knee deep in cold water I could feel rocks under my feet and I thought to myself that, I could more easier go over on my ankle and do some serious damage than running on the roads..... albeit more chance of getting knocked down!

10k everyday is pointless from the 44th placed in the amateur France championship in 2002 you are 50 you are just gonna ruin your knees and ankles 30 minutes run is well enough as all coaches recommend if you really need to run Every unless you run 20km/h

Kark

I sometimes fall into that trap of doing similar runs at similar paces, need to keep an eye on that. There's 2 local races on this week (4mile and 5km) so I'll use them as speed training.

"U have to have plan every week

U can’t just run same distance and same pace on every run

U need to mix it up

Monday recovery run off around 4/5 km

Tuesday rest day

Wednsday speed session 400/800s about 10 off them

Thursday 6/7 km run

Friday fast run 3/4 pace 7/8 km

Do same just take few km off all the runs

Saturday rest

Sunday ur long run 10/13 km

These are good sessions but not great for beginners ... i think ill post up the C25K sessions i did myself "

"Funtime king or any coaches why not post up a program here ... we've a little community building ...get some fabbers running "

Will do. Let me know what distances you want to train for and I can give you some programs. I have an couch to 5k program. Let me know if anyone wants it. I can send it on somehow. Tbh most c25k programs out there are good but very hard to do on your own. Get into a group or a club. The other runners will help realise your potential.

I dont have all the answers and neither does everyone else but you will always find something or a good training tip from everyone else, from the beginner to the elite.

My tip of the day? Recovery. Make sure you recover well before your next session.

Ok cool.

So week 1. Couch to 5K.

It will be 2 days this week.

Day 1. Warm up 5 min brisk walk. Dynamic stretching i.e. walking lunges stretching both arms overhead x10. Squats x10. High knees quickly for for 20 secs jog on the spot lightly for 20 secs x 3. Get your heart rate up. Leg swings forwards and backwards aletnate legs. 90 sec walk leading into the start of your sessions.

1min jog 1min walk x 10. That's it.

Warm down.

Static stretching. Calves, quads, IT. Shoulders etc. Try a plank for 30 seconds. I always spend 5 to 10 mins working on the core straight after a run. This is the best time to do it as your body and mind are still in training mode and you'll more likely to adhere to it. But for beginners 30 seconds is plenty for now.

As you can see the warm up/ down take up the bulk of the session and they are the most important. It's what makes the main session a quality one.

Take water anytime you need it. Sip it little and often after your session. Get protein into 20 to 30 mins after the session ends to help aid muscle recovery and build lean muscle, nuts, fish chicken etc.

Day 2 will be the exact same.

Just get out try it and enjoy it. Don't worry about foot strike , breathing etc. We'll focus on those in week 2 and 3.

Happy Running

Just signed up for a 10k in howth in October and a 10 mile in Killarney at the end of sept with a goal of doing the Waterford half in December. Did it last year and loved it. Was out of action with my Achilles for the last while so am easing back into it. Did first run last night in about a month
