Short distance, mid distance or long distance..

What’s your go to cures for fatigue, recovery?

I’ve been using the beach, open water, in soak for 10mins to recuperate the legs.

Anything else that could be done to help?

I've loads, cold baths or at least put your feet into cold water, Epsom salts baths too, stretching obvs, magnesium is great too, a foam roller is a must, lay on your back and put your legs up against a wall to help the blood flow back out of your legs, massages and I sometimes do a float(great for resting and it's full of Epson salts too) and I do like a cup of coffee after I cooled down

Thanks, plenty there to help!

Although can you expand on the float? Haven’t heard of that before

Its a sensory deprivation tank or more commonly known as a float. It's a big tank with about a foot of water thats full of Epsom salts so you actually float, it takes the pressure off your joints. Its also pitch dark and sound proof(alto you can turn on a light or have pan pipe music playing). Its kind of surreal floating, i felt like i was in space and it can get a bit trippy if you're in the frame of mind

Swimming, walking and/or yoga. Also plenty of foam rolling, proper night's sleep, elevate legs when possible, drink water and eat healthy, especially soon after running. Tom

Epsom salt baths, stretching and rolling, have found Pilates has helped recently, was injured for a month so gave it a go.

Loughlinstown

First off, get into a good stretching routine or have a Personal Trainer at your local gym to go through some PNF stretching with you as these are deeper stretches for your glutes, quads, hams, calves and I.T band

Book in for few 15 minute stretching sessions with him/her if you're serious about your running...

-Get yourself a proper roller for your I.T band

- Yoga or Bodybalance once a week is great too

- Occasional soak in a bath of epson salts for 20 minutes can help too...

Hope that helps

Slowly easing myself back into exercise..have been lacking motivation in recent months for a variety of reasons..I'll get out this evening for another brisk walk.

This time two years ago I was preparing for my first half marathon, at the Dublin Rock n Roll half marathon, from there I went on to complete Dublin City Marathon in late 2016, definitely one of my proudest achievements. I turned 40 that year and the marathon was a culmination of almost three years of running from late 2013 during which time I not only lost almost 4st in weight but also discovered so much about myself and what can be achieved when you put your mind to it.

Really enjoying this thread and from chats with another Fab member (you know who you are) am feeling slowly but surely motivated again so thank you OP for your post, I wish you all the best with your forthcoming running event

It's not easy to get motivation back after all the marathon training and then the sense of achievement of completing it. I'd advise signing up for a 10k or half marathon and give you something to aim for and hopefully the motivation will return

Yeah I think that's been the biggest issue for me, after the many many weeks and months of training culminating in the marathon it has been a struggle to maintain motivation..you are right about having a goal to aim for..I may get looking at forthcoming races so

Absolutely, I'd be bummed if I didn't push every millimeter all the ways to the end..and then coming across the line with legs buckling is the greatest feeling.....and then collapsing in a sweaty sticky mess afterwards.....oh running suddenly got sexy

I honestly don't want that to sound like I'm blowing smoke up my own ass. I just have normal fitness, but for me, the spin/combo run just works. I also combine that with basic weight training in my local gym. Nothing major or exciting, just regular weights.

Buy a new tshirt. I recently purchased some training wear on a protein site and they are the business. No irritation even on long distances 9m+ in the rain

Might seem weird but the best thing I find is a recovery run. I now do a half marathon once a week a 10 mile once a week and 2 10ks. the days inbetween I do slow runs at 60% effort.

Still a novice runner... was 20 stone less than 4 months ago! Lol

Wiw huge distances to do weekly ..do you do intervals or tempo paces ?? Woyld you not be concerned with such sustained lo g distances you'll injure yourself ???

I'm not pushing for personal bests all the time... just long slow relaxed runs. If you look at people like mo farah they run big miles everyday but most of them are slow recovery runs. That's why I try and do the same.

Supposedly shin splints can be prevented by stretching of the calves. Find a stair and drop your ankle off the back, and keep your toes pressing forward and should help. Failing that and you have no stairs get a belt, and use that to wrap around foot beneath the toes, straighten the leg and pull the belt lol

Well done on the time for the half. I am aiming for under 2 hours myself, should be on track with my timings if they stay the same

"Just in from a tempo run and i got bloody shinsplints.... any advise people ???

Supposedly shin splints can be prevented by stretching of the calves. Find a stair and drop your ankle off the back, and keep your toes pressing forward and should help. Failing that and you have no stairs get a belt, and use that to wrap around foot beneath the toes, straighten the leg and pull the belt lol

Thanks lads, it's a long way off my pb, but that was set 3 years ago so I can't complain!

No happy ending to the rub down but going for another one soon, and that will end much happier

I know what I can do miles wise, tactically I’m going to follow a pacer for a target time, and know near the last 4/5miles I can up the pace and easily hit/beat what I’m Aiming for.

And I’m never doing another again

Yes, after work (which involves walking 10km everyday) I think I'll do a few sprints, still not feeling up for anything longer.

Online... google shock absorbers. Think it was sports direct. I wanted a different pelvic support short but they were €50/€60 these were on sale. I wore them marathon training and so comfortable. Great waistband and compression support.

Bras are great too

I just can't run for the life of me.

I look far more athletic than some of my buddies who do ironmans etc but I'm fooked after 5k... Not even putting in good times..
