"OH doesn't want to watch it because of the themes/setup but I'd love to. Supposedly very good "
Beautifully written book, oppressively dark. The author took example from reality. Any evil committed has already been done. The sequence of events that led to Guilead are totally plausible. |

Ok, not a clue what you're talking about but the fact you're so invested interests me in the programme |

Never heard of it(the show) until now but totalitarian societies are the future. One world government, everything about you tracked, no cash etc... Plus birth rates could actually drop, men have a lower sperm count compared to their great grand fathers. I sound like a nut job but I hate the breaking up and forced diversity of nations. Eventually everywhere will be the same besides the weather. |

It's a dystopia where woman are ordered by their fertillity. The wives wear virginal blue, handmaids red ( fertility) Marthas gray ( they are beyond childbearing years and act as servants)
It's set in the near future when USA is overturned by a totalitarian regime. The new country is Guillead ... it's dark, very very dark |

It's very plausible that this could happen ... it was small steps that led to this. Little by little .. it's a stark warning I fee. The author is a genius in my humble opinion |

Falling birth rates and falling populations in the developed world. This is all fact. Men's sperm counts falling .. this is fact. This is happening. .the rest is possible |

"Fascinating to watch must admit could see it becoming a futuristic government but not here . Best series so far after power for me loved it . "
The beauty of it is it could happen here .. it could happen anywhere. Environmental disaster coupled with falling birth rates and a rise in the religious right wing ...deadly triangle |

This will happen, not exactly like this book but we will be controlled like this as a whole. I don't even see it as the USA. I think one world government is down the line but I see it a long way off so I'll be dead. Still we're becoming easier and easier to control by the day. |

"As the series progresses you can see how the falling birth rates are just a cover as it’s really about control"
It's all about mens control over women hence the colours. . It puts women in their place. Woman no longer allowed to read or write. The flash backs are key to it all |

We went off book for series two but they used the author to develop the storyline .. it's darker and more sinister. My tummy is generally in knots watching it. It's the sense of foreboding throughout.

Hang on! Does this dystopian society mean men get to drink in the pub without the interruption of female chatter? Like the good old days, where there used to be craic with feic all fighting, because there was no pussy to be challenging anyone over and the pub was a peaceful emporium of male inebriation without female induced stress? |

Regardless, I'm top inebriated to comment further and haven't watched this, so will try to refrain from commenting further on this thread.

The author Margaret Atwood is quite vocal in her dislike of Trump. She and other fans of the book including myself have drawn conclusions about his behaviour and how is is pushing things and getting away with it. Everything that happens in a handmaid's tale has historically already been done to humans by other humans. We are capable of this dystopia |

My view is that the right wing crowd like trump and those pricks in Italy will have their day in the sun and there will be an extreme over reaction in the opposite direction to the seemingly grand but slowly and silently oppressive hard left.
People fell for communism less than 100 years ago. We haven't evolved enough since. |

I've some empathy for Aunt lydia. As twisted as the situation is she loves the girls. She wants to break them because she knows the alternative. I'll say nothing of the end of season two but retribution was served. I agree why this may not happen it may come close and nothing that was done has not already happened. It's chilling |

It's when the possible becomes the probable that we need to worry. This is a superb book a and TV series that reminds us to be vigilant. Lots of small changes can lead to something this. |

Ahh my friend Superflash, listen Capitalism is badly failing too straight in front of our eyes: the super rich 1% own half of the world's wealth already, middle class is disappearing, people have three jobs to make a living, poverty on the rise, inequality was never bigger. You could argue the right totalitarian regime is developing nicely as we speak, with a very few controlling everything including the media brainwashing machine. No sign for any left wing revolution at all, I'd say you've to wait a good while for that one because the ones in power currently are doing a fabulous job. It definitely is always better when the author themself has a good role in the TV or movie adaptation and they're definitely highly motivated as it speaks of an extremely plausible scenario.
All it takes to change a society completely is a couple of decades. |

Religion won't control America in the future. 1/4 of Americans describe themselves as having no religion and alot more are people that say they're Christians /Muslims etc...but wouldn't know much about their religion like 90% of Ireland. I don't know single person that goes to mass regularly (grandparents and most older relatives are dead) yet when we fill out forms we say we're Catholics. We'll be controlled by security measures and giving up freedom for comforts. |

And while we can have hope in the growing apostate movement and Muslims calling for a proper Islamic Reformation like Christianity had, every time it's been attempted in the past, it's been dealt with through a violent backlash from those who wish to keep it in the past. |

"Religion won't control America in the future. Islam is the fastest growing religion at the moment..."
Ya but the amount on people not taking religion seriously is growing faster |

The trouble with religion in the US is that if you are religious over there you are fully fledged extreme orthodox. Been there many many times and often shocked at how feckin Catholic the Catholics are. I would consider them ultra conservative and far right of the Pope.
Funny thing, nothing in the history of human kind has been responsible for more cruelty and deaths than religion. |

"Read the book and was horrified and stuck to it completely. Haven't yet seen the show but definitely hope to start it shortly.
As an at wood fan I was cynical about the series. It's blown me away by the caliber of both the story line and the acting. They have excluded the racial divide and the power of the Baptists. . Canada is still saving grace though. At wood herself is on the writing team and it shows
It definitely is always better when the author themself has a good role in the TV or movie adaptation and they're definitely highly motivated as it speaks of an extremely plausible scenario.
All it takes to change a society completely is a couple of decades.
Oh yes panda. . I slight shift more to the right and we'll not be so happy
I'll get back to reading the Noam Chomsky books, hoping for the impractical libertarian socialist utopia."
OK sounds far more pleasant and no going round saying praise be to everyone |

All it takes is 1/3 of the population to agree on a cause. Totalitarian societies are more usually about the minority that hold power over the majority that live in it. ... one third of a population is far from everyone |

In others there is horrible abuse of women. It's not all black and white. |

Communism was a left wing ideology...redistribution of wealth leading to decades of misery, destitution and countless murders.
Capitalism for all its sins never fucked so many people so hard.

Feminism and antifa and BLM have an element of zealotry similar to any religion all wrapped in an easily swallow fluffy lining of doing the "right" thing.
Has anyone read Jordan Peterson's book?
The only path forward is centrist politics grounded in objective reality and humility and designed with a basis in equality of opportunity (not outcome...impossible without dangerous intervention). |

Great author. I haven't watched the series as I don't generally watch TV. Saw the movie year's ago and read the book. |

I've not read this but as I'm a passionate feminist I'll put it on my list. I firmly believe in continuing education. Open mind leads to real learning |

Madam I highly recommend this series. I'm an avid reader and a huge fan of the author. This is a fine piece of work. It's beautifully adapted and far and above anything that's been done before |

It's very difficult to quantify happiness, many people have a public face that's very different to their private one, and some of the countries with the highest "happiness" and "quality of life" indicators have high suicide rates, so I'd be very wary of declaring others as happy based on their outward demeanour. |

This is a beautiful series to watch as in how it is shot ....the camera angles ..close and intense ...others wide and dramatic....the colours ...the rooms decor ...loved all of that....the first
series was more visual I feel...the story line and content for me lost its way in the second series but still very watchable. Apples |

Maybe but it's a bit rich to think that people can't be happy with their faith and lifestyle just because there are bad actors within it.
Many Islamic families have deep loving bonds and treat each other like king and queen. |

Love your observations as far as how it was shot i agree. The intensity of the close up on June's face ... you actually felt her emotions. The colours and lighting were almost mesmerising along with the quiet. No modern noise ...it drew you in.
The second series story line I loved ... I felt Junes anger came out more and they humanised Serena. She is another victim of the regime. June remained central throughout it all.
My favourite line of the series June complains " I think I broke my hand when I hit him" (commander Waterford)
Rita.... " praise be" ... loved it |

Rover...I meant to commend your openness earlier. Jordan Peterson has been condemned (wrongly) by feminists because he takes some good swipes at your core assumptions.
It's a great book that is certainly thought provoking. First few chapters are hard going with all the Bible stuff but the second half is brilliant. |

If you don't mind me interjecting gentlemen while religious oppression happens and women's rights are abused it's dangerous to generalise. Islam at it's core is a very calm and loving religion. .. a lot of women find comfort and beauty in their headscarves. As it's my right to wear what I want it's also their right. It's the oppression, and violation of human rights that's the issue. Plenty of woman are happy and content within their societies the issue lies within countries like Iran and Afghanistan where little girls are been shot because they want to learn. The evil is not a burka the evil is and always will be the man holding the gun.

There are good and bad people of every lifestyle, religious or political affiliation. It's the bad that are the problem, in every situation, there is no utopia. |

I like how they made Serena somewhat understandable, still hoping she doesn’t survive the series though.
The show really portrays the hypocrisy of the fundamentalists. Sex should only be for conception yet happy to run whore houses with the women who wouldn’t submit to the handmaids role. The children are so important yet happy to let them die rather then get the best medical care for them. Can’t wait for the next series |
