I find the levels of d*unkenness, and the acceptance of it, far more embarrassing. There is a heroin problem in this country, and I'm not denying it, but there is a much bigger alcohol problem that has to be addressed.

westmeath & roscommon.

Every major city has these problems. Some people just don't know how to get themselves out of a bad situation. Some do buy many don't.

"when you say a "much bigger alcohol problem" what do you mean?"

Probably our attitude to alcohol that's been ingrained in our culture.

We've a bit of growing up to do.

It's why we need injection/injecting centres in the bigger cities.

We have pubs for alcoholics. It keeps most of them out of sight. Injection centres would be of the same principle

All has to be addressed but none will go away unfortunately and am sure those tourists see it in their own country also . It is everywhere .

Very much so. And specifically with young people and binge drinking. I know most of us did it ourselves when we were young but that’s no excuse for allowing our kids to develop the same bad habits.

I grew up with a few people having a drink problems in my family so was never really a drinker. Never liked it and hated it one time. Ireland is a depressing place to be between 16-24 if you're not into drinking. Every weekend, occasion etc....was used for drinking so I'd never have things to do at night at that time. You could never convince people to do other activities and going out sober was not fun. Ireland is changing though. My own friends don't even like going out anymore haha

But they cause fights, assault people, fall over, damage property and put pressure on our health system but I do see heroin, , xanax etc...as bigger problems. D*unks we can deal with most of the time but there was a few old people and I mean close to 80 if not older robbed in limerick the last year and that's definitely drugs not drink. Drug users take things a step further and act more desperate

Problem is the health system isn't catering for ppl who are addicted. Only yest one of my friends her son is hooked on valium so he has tried getting help no one can . So he tried to overdose yest to seek help as he thought. But was released frm hospital last ngt and told he has to do it himself. So there's no where they can go for the help . Yes there's a few places but all private if u had money to pay for it.

I've noticed it's not a recent thing though. It's been there a long time but I think with a more 'progressively accepting culture' it allows what is normally hidden or underground activities to be displayed more openly in public.

Alcohol abuse causes untold psychological damage in families, as well as contributing to physical and mental health problems for the person themselves and poverty in dependents. It is a significant factor in domestic violence.

No, they punch and kick the living daylights out of people, causing life changing injuries or death. How many times have we read about ‘one punch’ victims hitting their head off the pavements and dying thanks to some gargled up dickhead who wants to show how manly he is. What about the selfish assholes who drink and drive?

Drinkers also clog up our emergency rooms just because they drink to ridiculous levels on nights out. People need to cop the fuck on and know what their limits are. I enjoy alcohol as much as anyone but I don’t abuse it.

Close to Letterkenny

In Ireland in 2012, 88 people on average died a month from alcohol and alcohol related illnesses. Our two biggest killers are tobacco and alcohol. All illegal drugs combined still don't come anywhere close to the damage these two legal drugs have done, not to mention the drain on our health service.

It's not the deaths that are the real damage to society. Alcohol abuse and rekated activities that possible are the most damaging addictions to the family and society that there is.

"I havnt seen any in other countries I've been in tbh "

We see other places through different eyes, whether through tourist eyes which is often the case with travel. If in a place for more than a month we start to see more how the locals see and our views change as well. This can be akso by moving off the tourist beat and seeing from a different perspective, but drug/alcohol abuse is pandemic. The drug trade is the 3rd largest global criminal trade behind arms and slavery now.

Addicts only rob to pay the high price of their drugs

Decriminalise drugs and give hard drugs out on prescription then that all stops, with one stroke of a pen

Doesn't embarrass me as the problem is worldwide and all these tourists have seen it in their own countries. Someone said they don't see it on holidays.. Could be because you are staying in holiday resorts and not as much with the local communities but its still there. Alcohol is certainly a bigger issue and because its legal its ignored. I'm fond of a drink the same as the next person but our country as a whole needs to change their attitudes to alcohol and its abuse. Its instilled in most of us from a very young age that our drinking culture is normal but there is nothing normal about the effects it has on the individual, their families, wider communities with drink driving, fights etc. Through my job... to learn that it is easier to wean someone off heroin than it is alcohol is very very frightening and there needs to be a massive change.Unfortunately with the money these massive companies are making through our excessive drinking the drug task teams are fighting a loosing battle with making people more aware of alcohol and the issues that come with it

Listen this is liberal Ireland. Far from tackling the problem in any sort of logical way, they will campaign to have legalised.

Just listen to blind boy boat club or some other drug abusing liberal to find out where the country is going.

Lots think he gives Limerick a great name, but we might deal with that in a separate thread!

Personal autonomy is a cornerstone of right wing thought so legalizing drugs and letting adults make their own choices would fit in with that... But it doesn't always fit in with conservative morality. Do ye think drugs should be illegal? If so, why? And if yes, and you think the current system isn't working, what would you change?

I have a lot of compassion for people struggling with addiction. But there are countless addicts that don't want to give up their vice. I'm all for doing everything possible to help addicts that genuinely want to get clean. Those that don't want to get clean via therapy, counselling etc etc and are a drain on society should be rounded up and forced to get clean via cold turkey and if a few of them don't make it then maybe that will encourage others to actively engage in rehabilitation.

I had the misfortune to be in an A&E ward with a young child last weekend. It was not the most pleasant place to be, especially with a worried, tired child, but after about 10pm, when the d*unks stated to pile in, it became positively frightening for her. People were behaving in a disgusting, vile manner because of how intoxicated they were, abusing staff members, falling around the place, one idea attempted to light a cigarette in there! Oddly enough I didn't see any junkies in there...

Agreed, why is it deemed to be "bullshit" if it's liberal and left leaning? Does that mean that it's not "bullshit" if it is conservative and right wing?

Newry

Addiction is the problem. Or is it the human species that is the real issue.

Perhaps some races of people have more problems with this than others. Depending on the vices available in their society.

Food addiction

Gambling addiction

Alcohol addiction

Drug addiction

Shopping addiction

Porn addiction.

Many others

Most often the behaviours that are visible when under the influence of some of these addictions are the reason the addiction has developed. Reasons like low self esteem or abuse that has occurred or simply being a victim of your circumstances.

It's not the drugs fault or the bar man's fault or bookies fault.

It's time for a better understanding resourcing of mental health.
