900 years of persecution out the window every Saturday and Sunday by irish people crossing the water to support soccer clubs of the crown. Why should the World Cup be any different?

Come on Engerrrland!

Fans from all over the world support clubs in England , the lack of support doesn't have to be because of the historical situation. It could be just most of the time the English side doesn't play attractive football. That coupled with the exposure of English media I think also sways a significant amount of people.

I'd have a soft spot for Germany so wasn't too pleased yesterday but Mexico deserved it to be fair. A great performance.

I'd be pleased for the Liverpool lads if England do something of note and not too pushed if they get knocked out at group stage.

I do agree though I think it's time to move on from the bitterness.

Good post. My lack of support for England is nothing to do with bitterness or anything like that, and I do support Liverpool. I just feel like there are teams at the World Cup that are more deserving of support, such as Costa Rica or Peru etc.

Can I just say that not supporting England doesn't mean you hate them. Even on Niall Boylans show last week there was an English person that started a debate asking why we don't support them at the world cup but they support us. Firstly, some of them support us and some definitely don't if you're on Facebook and see comments when we lose by some English people you'll know some definitely don't. Secondly, some Irish people do support them, my own cousin changed their profile to an England banner on Facebook. Thirdly, I usually support the teams with my favourite players and that's usually never England. Fifthly (not filthy) although the clubs are situated in England they're international clubs. Most clubs have more foreign players. Should Arsenal fans have supported France when Henry, Vieira, Wiltord, Pires etc... Were all there?

I agree, Irish football fans who support an English team should support England now that Ireland is not in it. England doing well = good for their club.

The only exception to this would be if for example you supported liverpool and your only player in the world cup was playing for Egypt, then obviously support Egypt. Thats just an example, liverpool might have other players in the world cup etc etc.

I can easily separate the fact I support an 'English' team and vehemently support any team that plays England in the World Cup. The reason why is that the vast majority of premier league teams are foreign owned, completely mutlinational and have a global fan base. I'm sure there's hundreds of thousands of Swedish fans who'd have Liverpool or Man Utd as their first team. Would they feel upset knocking England out? They would in their hoop!

It's the worst logic ever. It's like saying England invented football so every nation has to support them. I'm an Arsenal fan. I was beaming Wilshere left. I'd like Welbeck to go too. Most Arsenal players are foreign. They're owned by an American and a Russian. Their best ever player was French and their most capped player is our own David O Leary. I don't support England because I support Arsenal. I also like Celtic and don't support Scotland haha.

We never demand that the English support us, nor do we of the Welsh or Scottish. Why is this a thing here? If some Irish people don't want to support England then they don't have to give a reason. Same as if they want to support them.

Lets try and forget the history of brutal English oppression 300 yrs ago and look at this objectively.

Reasons NOT to support England:

1) They are generally not an attractive team to watch, often not being able to pass the ball 20yds to each other

2) They have no exciting 'flair' players

3) A good portion of their fans seem to be among the worst behaved louts in World football, often bringing shame on their country (e.g. recent friendly match in Holland)

4) The English football (and perhaps general) mentality is one of breathtakingly misplaced arrogance and superiority, manifesting in poor social behaviour, chants and sneeringly demeaning comments aimed at pretty much anyone else

5) They do not know the meaning of the word 'magnanimous'. On the rare occasion they win at something, many of them nearly aggressively ram this down everyone elses throats.

6) Usually (but not always), they're a bunch of c**ts.

Reasons to support England:

Come on Engerrrland!

There's always someone worse off than yourselves "

Who's worse off than the Irish.... Us Welsh and our scotish cousins... We have to live next door to the buggers....

At least we celts are pure.... The English are some of the most bastardised races ever... A right concoction.... Original celts, some roman(that's not just Italy but anywhere in empire) anglo's and saxons giving germanic influence followed vikings from Scandinavia with finally le icing on the top le Norman's from France.... Pour each ingredient separately to melting pot bring to the boil pouring out after simmering for a few centuries what becomes the English race and language
