Brainwashed social media profiles. Seems to be a real correlation between
*pro gun
*pro Trump
*anti immigrant
*anti anyone who isn't white.
*pro religious freedom as long as it's christian
*anti gay
*doesn't understand evolution
*flat earthers
*young earth creationists
*living in least educated states.
Is it just coincidence or is a mass ideology which indoctrinates those with little to no critical thinking skills. Those who believe in falsehoods despite objective evidence to the contrary. Is it a sense of tribalism that allows them to feel secure in a world that is being taken from their grasp .
What do you think without hopefully resorting to ad hom attacks on this particular group of folks ? |

It's history repeating itself
Populist:
Racist either colour/religion
Manipulative messages especially to the uneducated who are easily led by one sentence headlines
Anti media either by taking control of (Turkey) or sowing doubt on honest reporting
(Trump)
Consciously breaking down/weakening institutions
Great book called the four turning predicted this direction 20 years ago.
Just an opinion |

'Seems to be' is not fact based
Can you give some examples of where all of these correlations occur?
Is this your opinion? |

Well I haven't conducted a survey of every single one of those type profiles, hence I have not submitted data for peer review. I'm not going to point out individual social media profiles of members of the public to be discussed on here. It is intended to be more a discussion based on common correlations I have seen across the #MAGA crowd for instance. I'm not saying every profile is loaded with each of the generalisations above either. There does seem to be as I said a common correlation between a mixture of them. Just my thoughts |

The list is one side of the story and the hard left is just as deluded but probably more dangerous as they've wrapped the worst of their messages in a few layers of marshmallows and puppies to be credible. The hard right are mostly seen as a joke but most unfortunately people seem to buy the identity politics of the left wholesale.
Some nice quotes that help explain what's happening:
"At the same time, we've become more individualistic and opiniated. Because we want something that makes sense in the world, we hold on to themes and ideas that are grounding and meaningful. This fixation creates factionalism and polarity. Identifying strongly with our thoughts and emotions, we mistake them for a solid "me" and then defend that apparition against the world. Social media and the news thrive on these elements".
"Life is then defined by the feeling of emotional and social separation - us Vs them. We don't really want to interact with others or we want to interact only with those who agree with us".

Been meaning to read this, thanks. These things definitely come in waves and we need to get better at seeing the second and third order bad effects of seemingly innocuous good intentions.
There is a time bomb of ill adjusted almost demonised young men emerging as a side effect of mainstream feminism.
Black lives matters is actually stoking the fires of racism. |

The feminist issue I have to say I agree with. Third wave feminism to be exact. The third wave movement is no longer about equality and more about superiority. You only have to look at the rantings of big red to get a glimpse of the issue.
If your looking for something to read I’d suggest “Them” by Jon Ronson. He gets right to the core of meme thinking. |

Or anything by Italo Calvino, but especially The Adventures of a photographer. Thought provoking stuff on photography, life and, well stuff.

Lads lads lads... And ladies,
Have you tried using the politics forum on fab? Might be a better place to bring this topic and you'll probably get a better response
Also this seems to be a very American themed thread? I dunno that's just the vibe I got from your first comment |

It is alright I guess. In the modern world I guess most of us are aware if not intrigued by that political demographic. Interesting to see different views on the thread from those who have contributed to be fair. We can only grow by allowing our own beliefs to be challenged. |

No I get that but was just saying there's a specific forum created for debates on political ideologies which is full of contributors from across the globe which I feel is under used by ourselves the Irish members of fab.
Maybe it's not known? |

In favour of very strict gun control with who has access to them and what guns they have access to . People should have to pass a test of mental competency amongst other things
*Not a fan of Trump
*Very open to immigration with numbers to be monitored not dependent on skin colour/ethnicity/religious affilition
*Couldn't care less what colour someones skin is.
*Atheist but people can believe what they want. That belief however doesn't come with the right to impinge on others liberty.
*PRO LGBT
*Understand evolution
*spherical earth
*the earth is circa 4.5 billion of years old

You do know we live in Ireland a country with extremely strict gun laws and not America and pontificating about another country's gun laws in a country where they don't actually affect you is about as much use as a chocolate tea pot. |

You do know people can move around the world ? I lived in the states for a few years and could possibly go back.
That's neither here nor there. Do you suggest living life in your own echo chamber because something doesn't affect you is the way to go ?
In that vein of thought men shouldn't be allowed to have voted on the 8th nor straight people on marriage equality.
I'm well aware of the gun laws here and the thread was about profiles that would usually be American based (at least in a theoretical sense/some bots aside) . So my views I posted were in relation to the first post I posted. The fact Ireland runs parallel with some of my thoughts is nothing to do with the inital post. |

I don't know of any correlation Op between "pro Trump" and "flat earthers" but if anyone goes looking for similarities between both topics, guess what... you'll most likely find similarities...
What's most worrying here is the propoganda and scare tactics used by ALL Governments that people are now being subjected to every day of their lives and the same people think they're making rational and informed decisions
Cases in point:
- Obama's was going to "change" the world bring peace, unite the world and be everything to everyone. (Facts are he couldn't close Guantanamo bay, America was at war every day of his presidency and he drove the National Debt up to 19 trillion dollars)
- Ireland was forced to vote in The Lisbon Treaty TWICE because they didn't "Yes" the first time around. ("Republic" Of Ireland... ehhh hello )
- If the Russians, German's or Chinese had been "pro guns" with dictators like Hitler, Stalin or Mao in power, each tyrant would have had great, great difficultly gaining control over their respective populations.
The truth is brainwashing and propoganda has and is used by advertisers and Governments thanks to the blueprint provided by the works of Gustav Lebon and Edward Bernay. If you've ever felt a little duped by this left vs right, good vs bad paradigm... you're in the right place right now |

I agree with a lot of that post and the correlation I usually see is the evangelical christian who is as fundamentalist in their interpretation of their holy book as many would consider extreme muslims. A lack of critical thinking skills and various forms of cognjtive biases with the scaffolding of info wars/fox news/breitbart being their political pedestal they tend to absorb from.
The fact I don't like Trump doesn't automatically mean I think Obama was fantastic or that Hilary would have been a good choice. If she had been voted in this thread could still be here just with a different direction.
Good post you make though and possibly yes with the gun control but that leads to a lot of other issues that some percieve as collateral damage for the sake of the right of the 2A. |

Thanks Op... Truth is the likes of you or me will never get the a true answer from politicians or Governments is because they have their own set agenda to follow that they won't deviate from for a few years until "the other party" gets in and reverses things...
Add to that the Hegelian Dialectic of PROBLEM-REACTION-SOLUTION used & forced upon us all every day by both sides and the whole charade gets very old very quickly...

There is indeed. As I currently live in Ireland and people here are hopefully not as emotionally attached to the topic I was hoping for as I have got some reasoned points with plenty to think about and books to research further.
I take on board your point though for sure. I feel with free speech I'm allowed to post the topic here as you are allowed to criticise the posting of the topic with the same vigour. |

I do see your points. I absolutely do. I agree that government x will have agenda y and will very often use the best of spin/alternative facts or downright lie to convey the message they wish to send out. On the flip side is people who push narratives based on conspiracy/what feels right/lack of scientific understanding.
You do raise some good points though and it is interesting how we conduct ourselves as a species for sure. |

The difference between centuries of government led propaganda and now is that there's now an army of ifiots coming from all directions of ignorance and all suffering from a little bit of knowledge in the wrong hands.

We need to be careful of how science is practiced and interpreted too, there is plenty of scienceism knocking around with made up psuedo evolutionary psychology and pop surveys mascarading as hard fact in the social sciences. |

"Careful now the echo chamber has been mentioned, next it will be all about the cognitive bias...I do need to read more books to broaden my understanding."
Anyone with an interest in the subject would benefit from keeping updated on it. There is a lot of interesting talk about it and how it is being added to every so often as understanding improves on the subject. Certainly find myself engaged anytime I come across something new in that direction when it has such an impact on how people think and act. I must get around to checking out that book you mentioned earlier in the thread too. Thanks for sharing. |
