Right, great topic, here's my tuppence worth: top of my list is "It's a Wonderful life" Donna Reed mmmm but the story is just magical. I love the bit where they are still single, just after having an unmerciful row and cheek to cheek on the phone in her house...the chemistry between the two actors was amazing. Frank Capra was a genius and the story behind the film is worth reading up on.
RTE used to show "Chitty Chitty feckin Bang Bang" every Christmas when I was a kid. Now, what in the name of Jaysus it ( or "the Great Escape"- which I enjoyed) had to do with Christmas I have no idea. Another odd one, with no apparent Christmas connection or theme, that used regularly appear was "The Great Race". Home alone? Yeah, it was great being at home alone anticipating the scenes where the gorgeous Natalie Wood was reduced to her corset, stockings and suspenders in the pie fight (I'm sure there were adult subtexts at play with all those creampie faces but.....what did I know, a sexy woman in her undies, what more could you wish for!)
Another film non-Christmas film in which one of the best Christmas lines is uttered is "Robin Hood - Prince of thieves". Granted it's mostly fluff but Alan Rickman as the comic book villain, the Sherriff of Nottingham, gets to say "oh...and call off Christmas!!" .
Speaking of comic book villains, in "Die Hard" Hans Gruber,as you all know was also expertly played by the much missed Mr Rickman. IMDB has lots of Trivia but I seem to remember reading that in the scene where he falls off the skyscraper, the look of surprise is genuine. The director told Rickman that the stunt guy, standing in for Bruce, holding his hand was going to let him go on a count of three but he told the stuntman to drop Rickman on two, hence the surprise.
More Christmas favourites include "White Christmas" and "Going My Way" with Bing singing "toor a loor a loor al" for Barry Fitzgerald, magic!
Anyway, so many great films and if anyone gets the chance, check out what the Gogglebox kids thought of "Home alone" ....classic TV. Whether you have kids or not, they and family are what Christmas is all about.
Sorry for going on a bit, but it's a great topic
