There are male and female trees.

Only females have berries and they won't have berries if there is no male tree nearby.

Some of them cannot get meets

OK

Lets all start tapping our thighs, lets get that beat and rhythem, are we ready

ALL TOGETHER NOW........

"The Holly and the Ivy,

of all the trees that are in the wood,

the Holly bears the crown"

No doubt we're all be humming that for the rest of the day...

Seriously there a lot of stock for old country folk law old wifes tales, I was always led to believe the more abundant the berries (holly and Rowan trees) the harsher the weather ahead, it was natures way of providing for its own.

Now these isles have just had a cold spell, if there's no berries about it may be that may well have been our winter this year, or the berries are holding back as there could be worse weather ahead.

Or alternatively our opening OP was slow off the mark and other buggers were ahead of him cutting down the branches with berries.

Just seen OP is from Co Carlow

All is explained and as some guy would say to a Dr Watson "its elementary".....

Though no doubt deemed by some as controversial and may ruffle a few feathers......

Is Co Carlow not known for having people from what may be known as the "travelling fraternity", evidently they've cut the berries down to sell, and evidently left none around. Suppose they have to have something to sell in the winter as strawberries are not in season...

ouch, ooh, ow , ouch, ow, thud,

let the kicking commence
