Bill pay , have been for 15 years, but I reckon I could be getting a better deal if I shopped around , but on the other hand you get a free upgrade every 18 months, so basically you’re just paying for your new phone along the way .

Buy the phone on Amazon/eBay, go with iD or Tesco mobile for max€25 a month and you aren't tied into a 2yr contract and you save at least €200 on overall price a 2yr contact is.

Buy OnePlus 5T or either Samsung Galaxy S7(£350) or S8(£500) on eBay, probably similar prices on Amazon in January and your quids in with a kick ass phone and nothing longer than a 30day contract. Samsung phones have 2yr warranty also, so buy yourself a decent case and a 9H glass screen protector and you're good to go.

If you're an Apple fan, sorry but not my area and best of luck.

Oh, if the above is beyond price range, Moto G5S is £175 on Amazon and a brilliant budget phone

"I’m bill pay and get a new phone every 2yrs"

Has it gone up to two years now ? Bloody hell , it used to be every year , then 18 months . But maybe it depends on how much a month you sign up for . I think it’s a handy way of paying for a new phone and still getting mostly unlimited service .

Compare the prices for the phone if you buy it outright and what you pay over the contract.

It's NEVER cheaper to take an 18-24mth contract than buying the phone outright and choosing the Sim only plan to suit.

Of course, that all requires you to have the money to buy the phone to begin with, which is not practical for a lot of people, I understand.

No, it's a month or so since I checked but S8, not S8 Plus, was £535 sterling on eBay from an Irish seller. Brand new, boxed and sealed, reputable seller.

They expect S9 specs to be announced in January, so with that, combined with January sales, I expect similar prices to be available on Amazon. I'm looking for one myself then, hence my research

But the price you’re paying a month is for the new phone , calls , texts and data . If you have the money to buy the phone outright , how much would you spend a week/ month on credit ?

Northerner here.

I had contract phones in the past and vowed never again.

I now buy my phone outright and am with Giffgaff. £20 a month tariff and I get unlimited calls and texts to all networks and unlimited data. This tariff even works anywhere I go in the EU.

Hard pushed to beat it.

I've had iPhones and Samsung Galaxies in the past. I will never ever own another iPhone. They break too easily and are not user friendly. Samsung Galaxies are good though and more user friendly. At the moment I have a Moto G4 Plus which I got just over a year ago after deciding to try something different and it's easily best phone I've ever owned. Does the exact same as Samsung Galaxy S7 and phones that are similar and only costs half the price. Mine was around £250 and that was a customised design.

Moto G5 is out at the moment so I might treat myself for Christmas.

If you do buy a phone outright and, like me, are prone to dropping them then I advise you get yourself a good back cover and a tempered glass screen. Both will only cost you about £15 quid for the two and will save you expensive repairs in the long run.

My phone still looks like new when you take the covers off.

As for contracts, nah, not worth the hassle.

Go for Moto G5S Mr C. It's only£25 extra on Amazon and big difference in specs but just a few mm longer, almost same exact width. Easy ladies!

Did a comparison on G5 and G5S myself a week ago and it really is £25 worth spending

Have Moto X Play myself and has been excellent for the Black Friday price I got it for a year or two ago. Always had Samsung Galaxy before though and I am hankering after an S8. Their cameras are almost unbeatable and they last for years. Son still using my old S4 and I've a few S2 still working

As you say, get a tempered glass screen protector and decent case (Spigen are very good, cheaper and neater than Otterbox) and your good.

Ah yes. That was a mistype on my part. Meant to write G5S not G5. My bad lol.

But yep I think the extra specs is well worth the extra money. Will mull it over.

Regardless of the phone make, it’s always always better to buy outright if you can afford it and take a 30 day contract. I’m with three and get unlimited minutes, texts and 12gb data for £11 a month which is amazing

Ps as pricey as the iPhone X is - it’s the best phone I’ve ever owned

SIM only is the way to go, can get great phones 200-300 online and all you can eat with SIM only for around 25 a month, no brainer really.

It's gone back up to £220 again on Amazon but keep an eye on it from 26th and it'll probably be on sale again for the £175 I got it for, for a friend
