I love music, it's a big part of my life, have to have music on at every opportunity.
The favourite album thread made me think of when I first became aware of music, and started to appreciate it and really take notice of it and actually make choices about the type of music I wanted to Liston to and explore more.
The song that made me stop in my tracks was Geno, by Dexy's Midnight Runners.
I remember hearing it and being blown away and awakening an interest that is still alive today.
What is your musical awakening moment? |

I couldn't pick one. I remember hearing Villiers Terrace by Echo and The Bunnymen and thinking this is good and wtf is this about (drugs)
The Way Girls Talk by The Undertones was the song for me about being horny and confused.
Hanx! by SLF resonated very strongly with me.
Have to add No Time For Love by Moving Hearts |

Without thinking about it, it has to be Queen and Bohemian Rhapsody. I was the tender age of 8/9 when it was released. My brother bought Night at the Opera album and i was hooked. I know the lyrics of the song back to front, forwards and backwards and over the years i learned the history and meaning of it. It never gets old |

"Dexy's were a class outfit!
They were indeed Michael, what piece of music made a lasting impression on you"
Come on Eileen reintroduced me to Van the man as I hadn't paid any heed to him up to that point. Jackie Wilson says kinda introduced me to Jackie Wilson as well. I grew up in an environment where traditional and folk music were the big influences. I loved them them and they're still my go-to for pleasure but bands like Dexy's and as black dog mentioned above, the undertones made me realise that there were other sounds I could enjoy. The undertones teenage kicks, which I had missed until later, spoke to us all and it's gonna happen was just one of the catchiest things I've ever heard. |

Funny enough, I associate John Denver's country roads with sunny summer weather. I remember hearing it played regularly during a hot summer break in the seventies. I'm wondering now if it was '76? I remember that one well as it was an incredible summer of sunshine and drought. |

Dexys were brilliant. Saw them in the national stadium around the time too rye aye was out. Only problem I had was Kevin Rowlands insistence on changing some of the older songs entirely to new versions. Otherwise was a great gig.
Was always a punk kid growing up. Hearing Rattus Norvegicus for the first time blew me away and have remained a fan ever since |

But radio would have played the song a lot, I remember hearing it all the time. Along with lots of disco and funk.

Excellent track.
Stop making sense is where I first came across the band and that version always stands out for me.

I don't know. I don't recognise the name but so many shops came and went over the years. I presume you mean a shop of that name and not just a woman from the locality? |

Yes, a shop and not a local woman
Can remember there being a lot of clothes and shoes shops there in the 80's all blaring out music. Nostalgia day for me here.

I remember one late Thursday evening cycling up Mary St and Henry street from Capel street. Just when was reaching O'Connell street a cop appeared in front of me and started chastising me about cycling on the now pedestrianised street. What made matters worse was that in the hours it wasn't pedestrianised it was a one way street. I asked him if it would help if I pointed out that I was only going one way and he laughed so much that he just told me to go on but not knock anyone down. About a week later I was cycling down North Earl street, also pedestrianised, when the same cop stepped out again. He recognised me from the previous incident and started laughing about it again. He said it was one of those old jokes but he had never actually heard it being used until then. We became nodding acquaintances for a couple of years after that. Good times indeed! |

I bought my first Vinyl in Freebird on Grafton St Alice's Restaurant. Jesus. I was so proud of the plastic bag! I'm remembering the girls all wearing patchouli oil, you could pass out after a snog. |

Well as a kid, it was whatever Dad was listening to, which was mostly trad/folk, which I still like. Then I was sent to the Gaeltacht when I was around 11 and a guy there was playing Deep Purple-Deepest Purple. I was amazed and that started a life long love of rock and metal, along with a ridiculous amount of time spent in Sound Cellar on Nassau Street, talking to Tommy and flicking through the vinyl.
So, thanks to Dalo from Dublin for opening my ears to Deep Purple all those years ago |

I grew up around music, my dad my uncles & older cousins were all involved in mobile discos etc. I remember as a kid sitting in the djbox handing the singles to them in playing order.
Back in the day of genre sets lol
Rock n roll with quo, the stones, ets
Disco with bee gees, anita ward, jacksons,
Then the slow sets ...the real reason every teen was there lol with peaches and cream, moody blues and the commodores.
And that was before i ever made it to a disco of my own |

It was always just kind of there. I have vague memories of getting a Cliff Richard record when I was only 5 or 6 and playing it on a loop. It was just such a catchy pop song. I cannot remember the track. Ever since then music has always been there. But it has to be catchy, be it pop, indie, rock, electronic, house, disco.....etc |

Sounds like he was asking for something. Probably after a slow set. I wonder what though."
All this talk of slow sets is getting me hot and bothered here. What was it Ben Elton used to call it.. "The walk around slowly holding onto someone 'til the music stops" dance? |

"Dexys were brilliant. Saw them in the national stadium around the time too rye aye was out. Only problem I had was Kevin Rowlands insistence on changing some of the older songs entirely to new versions. Otherwise was a great gig.
Was always a punk kid growing up. Hearing Rattus Norvegicus for the first time blew me away and have remained a fan ever since"
Saw Dexys at the Ulster Hall when the floor collapsed !! Must have been, what,'82? |

"I grew up around music, my dad my uncles & older cousins were all involved in mobile discos etc.
And that was before i ever made it to a disco of my own
I'm impressed, what a way to be introduced to music, that was exactly the disco template. And don't forget the Anthem.at lights up!
Oh yes, after the last while set and trying to push your erection down so it wouldn't be noticed, and praying that you wouldn't end up with a wet patch! Good times!
Ffs, that's meant to be slow set!
A slow set... awwww.
Maybe there is a niche there that needs to be filled, 80's retro night.
Though I would need a wig to get back to the backcombed Robert Smith style. "
I went to an 80s night a few months ago..... still no slow set. |

"It was always just kind of there. I have vague memories of getting a Cliff Richard record when I was only 5 or 6 and playing it on a loop. It was just such a catchy pop song. I cannot remember the track. Ever since then music has always been there. But it has to be catchy, be it pop, indie, rock, electronic, house, disco.....etc"
I'm the same, though started off belonging to certain 'tribe' will now listen to most types, exception being freestyle jazz |
