On my phone it's under people, then in the top right hand side you've got a drop down arrow beside phone book, when it drops down you can select which book to use. No idea about recovering though I'm afraid |

If you use a backup app then it shall always keep your contacts saved. That way you will never lose any contacts even if you have to reinstall them every so often.
Also handy in case you ever lose your phone.
Personally I use CM Backup but there are plenty of apps just like it. |
