I hide mine all the time, usually when I log out I hide, even though I'm filtered up to the eyeballs it saves a build up of mail and sometimes I just want to browse forums without answering any mail.

Saves on getting mails and having to explain not meeting at the moment

some might well be fake...others just taking a break...some people hide it every time they log out... I think some are just having an online game of hide and seek too.
