Have an ex work colleague who sends me endless emails showing proof of a flat earth
Don't think he'll be happy until everyone believes in a flat earth with a big dome around it.
As John Lennon once said "strange days indeed" |

People will believe any conspiracy theory as if they are in on something the rest of the world doesn't know. People will believe 2+2 = potato if someone on the net males a meme for it.
The bible which implies the earth has 4 corners and is circa 6,000 years has people utterly convinced it is word for word the literal word of god.
People who believe the earth is flat cannot be reasoned with in general. I think it is best to leave them aloe with their tinfoil hats. |

Archaeologists near Mount Sinai have discovered what is believed to be a missing page from the Bible. The page is presently being carbon dated in Bonn. If genuine it belongs at the beginning of the Bible and is believed to read "To my darling Candy. All characters portrayed within this book are fictitious and any resemblance to persons living or dead is purely coincidental." The page has been universally condemned by church leaders. |

A little thought expensive experiment. Suppose you had a child and you educated the child yourself. When you taught Geography you had a custom globe which relabelled Ireland as Australia and Australia as Ireland.
The kid would grow up thinking he lived down under, ignoring external corrective influences. Even if he flew on an airplane, he can't see enough to deduce that what he was taught is wrong.
A lot of what we learn we just accept. Which is reasonable given we can't possibly see the proof ourselves on all matters. But always keep in mind only centuries ago, "common sense" said the Sun revolved around the Earth and that there was magic and witches.

Own opinion, I think flat earth theories are released and put out there to fool and funnel certain people or "truthers" who generally question certain world events into the "crazy crackpot/ conspiracy theorists" group...
What would be gained by hiding that sort of information if it was true? Seriously... |

Scary to think people still exist that believe that the world is flat given the evidence that exists to prove it otherwise. Backward is not the word id use.

"I'm not a flat earther lol, I just did a thought experiment for fun."
Of course we do have to accept a lot of what we are taught and we cannot prove everything for ourselves from first principles BUT if all the basic physical facts were false then nothing would work properly - you would not be able to fly, listen to the radio, watch TV, use a computer etc. So given these things do seem to work (unless I am just hallucinating the whole lot including typing this post) then I do tend to accept most of what I was taught at college is at least based on something real. However, the universe is a strange old place ... |

"depends on what your idea of 'god' is"
There has been countlesss god figures proposed over time. Zeus.. Thor.. Mithra.. Dionysus, the sun itself was thought of as a god, Isis, Osirs, jesus with a very contradictory bible, krishna, attis , horus, allah, apollo , ceres, eos, freya, hermes, venus.. the list goes on.
If there is a god. It is not understood by man. The gods that are worshipped could only have come from men with little to no understanding of the natural world.
An absolute belief in any of the man made god that is reasoned by "faith" for it being true is intellectually dishonest and any other area of life ideas have to reach a far far higher standard to he verified as a fact.
Religion is brainwashing for the masses make no mistake about it. |

I like Colbert funnily enough but he asks Gervais some of the typical questions religious people have. Gervais as much as people don't like him for some of his "offensive" material is quite astute and answers the questions very well. For me the question of "why" often comes into place when people have little to no understanding of the how . The lay person doesn't understand quantum mechanics, the lay person in the street does not understand general relativity in in how it sets out space, time and gravity.
People often come up with the saying "there is a reason for everything" as if there is an imbued purpose that will be revealed in time.
I do think there can be explanantions as to how things happened but often there need not be a purpose to specific event. |

There's something in our psyche that some people listen to, a fear? that our faulty, uneven, vicious, beautiful life is the peak, it's easier to believe there's something we can always strive for, become better, more godlike?
Me, I just like cake & a drink now & then, I'm me, faults & all. |
