My home is my sons home also.....i dont accommodate out of respect for him. I'd hate for him to feel uncomfortable in his own home. I'm not keen on going to someone's home either especially if its a complete stranger.
As for travel.....its not easy for some and is easier to stay close to home.
It's what the person feels comfortable with
