Love him or hate him, he certainly lived by his beliefs and led from the front. Who in 1972 would have believed that he would end up in government with Ian Paisley in the future? RIP Máirtín

Just about every place on the net ,every workplace ,cafe, pub etc will debate and disagree passionately this death today.

All I will say is the same as when Ian Paisley died.

This is a day to recognise the past and make damn sure it never happens again. Both sides lost and lost badly so let's bury him and move on.

I wasn't a fan of his politics and his past makes me sick. I will however say that over recent years he played a key role in moving my country forward and that should be acknowledged.

Some of the comments in the lounge thread are vile and ill-informed

Wow, gloating over his death, keeping it classy. I'm not going to say that I knew him well, we only spoke a few times. He was committed to his cause, when he advocated the use of force, he did so wholeheartly. Equally when he took up democratic means of advancing his cause, he committed his all.

It takes a lot of courage to sit down with your former enemies and say 'go ahead, I'm listening'.

QE2 was able to shake his hand and be cordial. Both of them lost family and friends here. I'm disappointed but not surprised by the vitriol and venom displayed by people whose ignorance of what actually happened here, why lives were wasted, is deafeningly loud.

One of the most heartening things about his illness and death has been the fulsome tributes paid by the sons of Ian Paisley to him (as was his tribute to Ian Paisley when he died). Nigel Dodds was also quite warm and sounded sad on the radio this morning. Everyone has a past but it's important that people work to ensure that we all have a shared future.

Martin McGuinness' work over the last 20 years has been instrumental in bringing about peace in Northern Ireland. Since the GFA he's been an example to all about building a better, more hopeful future for the people of NI. Putting hatred where it firmly belongs which is in the past and focusing on the future.

The next decade will see more people on both sides leave us. What we can do to honour their work and achievements is to ignore those that want to drag us back into old grudges and not let those whose hearts are consumed by hate infect us like the disease they are.

Northern Ireland is on a path to permanent peace and unity and only by setting aside anger and hate and embracing the opportunities to build relationships and friendships across the divide will we be able to continue the good work or McGuinness and his partners on both sides of the divide.

No I wouldn't. I think you are making some huge assumptions on people's background and beliefs.

Tell me how you are tying an anti-peace-process group's actions to one of the strongest pro-peace-process voices in McGuinness?

Do you think IRA were only ones to kill, injure police/army . Like i said to you before, read your history books more carefully, and if that's too big a job for you, at least read Wikipedia. Stay informed....

The last RUC officer killed as a direct result of the conflict, Francis O'Reilly (a Catholic constable), died on 6 October 1998, a month after he had been injured in a Red Hand Defenders pipe-bomb attack in Portadown during the Drumcree conflict.

He had a significant hand in the peace process and fair play to him for that. I'd hardly hold him in the same esteem as Mandela or Martin L King though.

Apologies.. That's the problem with the written word. That was sarcasm. The ANC killed people by putting tyres filled with petrol around their victims necks and set it alight. Nelson Mandela was as much responsible for that as Martin McGuinness was for all the things he's been accused of.

Ain't no orange in that cross and hand one though. It's them you have to reassure and get happy. If you don't win them over, the loyalists would make what the IRA and INLA did look like nothing.

That's why at the moment a united ireland is a pipe dream.

You need to realise that that peace keepy occupationy thingy cost more than WW2 and weather folks like it or not it was for your benefit.

It is still the single most expensive operation britains millitary have ever done.

An despite all the bravado and bullshit it was the crown protecting its citizens even if they didn't want it.

I did hear that for every 1 terrorist incident, the security forces prevented 20.

The last time I seen such disrespect for a death was when Ian paisley died, as a unionist I was disgusted then for the lack of empathy towards his nearest and dearest no matter what public opinion of the man was.

Being a unionist doesn't make my disgust at some of the things Iv read today any less potent than it was when paisley died, Martin mcguiness has kids, grandkids and a wife all of whom shud be shown if not some respect at this time then certainly some empathy.

Thankfully I have no politics...I live life to the full, for me and my family.

You all deserve each other.

The North deserves the South, as Northerners are delusional about their importance within the United Kingdom. The rest of the UK doesn't give a fuck about Northern Ireland.

The South deserves the North, to stop their constant rallying calls, to the cause of reunification....and you'd be bankrupt overnight, on Social Welfare payments alone. Truth is, a(probably significant) section of Northern Irish nationalists would vote against reunification, for that reason alone....

Funny the way intolerance and hatred breeds more intolerance and hatred. One of the reasons that Martin McGuinness was able to help make the peace process a success was his message of peace, respect and reconciliation. Maybe everyone should be taking a leaf out of his book and try to show compassion and respect towards each other instead of disrespect and insults and trying to stir up trouble.
