He was nothing more than a man who denied his responsibility when he got a woman pregnant...

Denied what he done....

Tried to cover it up...

Stole money...

Lied....

Yeah....

Lucan

He was an absolute hypocrite. He lectured people about morality while he was riding, drinking, stealing, and then denying everything.

On the plus side, well, at least he didn't bugger children, but u then the vast majority of people don't..

He was charming but in big sure that makes him any better.

I don't remember him lecturing morality any more than any other cleric of his time.

Bear in mind. He was banished to South America for his misbehaviour

Those that buggered children were transferred to the next parish....

No, he lectured on morality no more than other clerics but that doesn't make him any less of a hypocrite.

Many of the child rapists were actually shipped abroad too.

Putting on my humanist hat, it's a ridiculous thing asking a young man to sign up to a life of denying his natural urges. Back in those days you can recognise that he would have been under a lot of social pressure to go into such an esteemed profession.

So you can see the reasons behind it all in a sense.

Buggering kids, that shit is unforgiveable!

That said, the church has proven to be as good a training ground for psychopaths as the corporate world.

Just because Eamon Casey didn't bugger children or shove babies into a septic (but he did want his son to dissappear) tank it doesn't mean he was a good man..

He was a hypocrite, saying one thing and doing the other, don't forget he would have covered up for the perverts just like all the other bishops did,and are still doing

God rest him. He did bad but did a lot of good also. My father went to England when he was young and lived in an absolute shithole. Eamon Casey actually helped him and many more in his situation to find proper accommodation and stood fast with them. What he did was natural as such as appossed to rapping children. RIP.

This was true, he was a quite a complex person who achieved a lot in life. He was a voice for the marginalised and the poor. He established Trocaire in Ireland and Shelter in the UK. He was a very popular Bishop. The scandal regarding his son was the beginning of the end for the church in Ireland.

He refused to babtise a baby in galway because the mother was a single mother.

Hypocrisy anyone ?

He may only have had consensual sex with a woman but dont tell me be didnt know about all the other stuff the church was at.

He was bishop after all, a position of power.

Try to put things in context, the discipline and following of orders the church demanded from it clergy was eye watering. The church demanded absolute discipline with no allowance for dissent or personal conscience.

At the time, there were other single mums in galway having their kids baptized.

Casey himself over-ruled the parish priest and refused this particular mother himself.

He made that call

He seemed like a decent man with a man's normal messianic needs. Working in a corrupt, unbending and frankly wrong institution. He had to be made a lesson of.

I'd been to many of his sermons as a teen and he was fresh fun and seemed to want to bring the church into the "new age" as he called it...

He made religion cool...

He was great craic...

But he was nothing more than a hypocrite....

He stole money..

Lied...

Tried to cover it up...

Ran away....

Bullied a women to "get rid" of their son....

Knew what the church had done and was capable of, he could have changed things, but ran away instead!

Refusing to christen babies and preaching about unmarried mothers and the men who father their children...

He let so many people down....

But..

May he rest in peace

A massive supporter of the Irish in the Uk, at a time when the Irish weren't exactly loved there. All those trocaire boxes you see everywhere, thats his doing. He refused to shake Reagan's hand during his visit to Ireland which was a very power symbol at the time. I think despite of all his failings that he will grieved by his son. We are very complex creatures, capable of acts of compassion and cruelty.

I agree...

I seen his son in a interview on the late late show last year...

I just personally feel let down by him, he could have really changed the face of the Catholic Church, he had the influence and the following! It's a shame..

The church would have crushed him. it took me a long time to understand the discipline the church enforces on its clergy. They make ISIS look like amateurs. In some ways, in the long run he did us all a massive favour, albeit unintentionally.

How so?

I know it was in the early 90's when the scandal broke and shortly after that the abuse of children what he done would have been minimal...

He could have come out smelling the roses....

The whole scandal cost the Irish Catholic Church so much credibility. Overnight the church became fallible. People couldn't believe it. The Bishop of Galway had a son with an American Divorcee. And there she was on the late late........ You couldn't have made it up.
