Right now Venus, the Moon and Mars are all aligned in the sky. The bright star just below the moon is Venus and if you follow the line from Venus to the Moon, past the moon again about 1.5x the distance, that little faint star is Mars.

It looks beautiful out there now.

Loves me some science me

Yep. Bought me a telescope last month but haven't really braved the cold to use it.

No light pollution where I leave either. Great views.

Good app called sky view that lets you find stars and planets easily with your phone camera. Overlays the graphics on top. Try it out.

Been meaning to invest in one but there's no point. I live in the city center so barely see anything due to light pollution. I'm amazed I could see Mars tonight.

Apparently Neptune can be seen just behind Mars but you'd need a decent telescope with minimal light pollution.

Would love to be in the countryside now.

Am going to that, it should be very good. Have binoculars but a telescope is on my list of things to get this year but living in the city means loads of light pollution sadly.

My son told me last week it's called Uranus because it's full of methane and that's the same as what comes out of your anus

As if the alignment of the Moon and three planets wasn't enough last night, we will be heading into a meteor shower tonight. The Quadrantid Meteor Shower will be on display tonight and tomorrow night between midnight and dawn with up to 60 - 120 meteors an hour.

Of course conditions have to be favourable to see it in all its glory.

Enjoy stargazers .

There's a great Observatory in Dunsink and a club you can join on meetup for anyone who doesn't have their own equipment or is interested they meet up in places like the Phoenix park to exchange sitings and that. Might be of help to someone

If anyone's interested there will be a Lunar eclipse tonight beginning at around 10:35, reaching maximum at around 00:45 and concluding at around 02:55.

Unfortunately the sky is quite hazy here in Waterford city so I probably won't get to see it.

It's actually some night for Astronomy. There is also Comet 45P which passes every 5 years or something, can be seen tonight in the northern skies I believe.

Yep, you're spot on but apparently it can't be seen with the naked eye. They've said it will be hard to find it even with binoculars.

The moon is shining brightly down here in the south a little hazy but hopefully if it keeps like this should make good viewing for an eclipse....fingers crossed
