Great to see artists coming out, taking initiative and highlighting our huge homeless problem the government seem to be uncapable to deal with. Today's concert at the Apollo house had a great turn out. |

Hopefully they reverse the decision to demolish it then.
Also whilst I think it's great that they're standing up and taking people off the streets. I think it shows the Gardai for the double standard joke that they are.
I know people who have been beaten up and treated like dirt, being evicted from buildings they have occupied.
Amazing what a few celebrities will do to stop the Gardai arresting people. |

I don't think they'll reverse that decision and what a coincidence that the decision is being made just these days. However I think the government has to be very careful what they do next or they completely loose their face, also people will be protesting if this turns sour. |

I was going to post about this
I was laughed out of here a few weeks ago with the wild idea that homelessness could be solved if our government got off their arse (and if the whingers stop distracting them with water charges guff)
Really hope it gains momentum. Not a hope they will be allowed to stay... They are breaking the law but hopefully it sparks political will |

the guards can't arrest they checked for criminal damage and said there was none and that it was a civil matter. the government should finish the ghost estates and offer them to people on rent allowance that will empty a lot of rented properties and rents will come back down |

The turn out today was just amazing . It makes me proud to see people from all backgrounds come together to try solve our homeless problem unfortunately the same can not be said for the government and that is disgraceful.
As laid said the ghost estates need to be fixed up and there needs to be more dry hostels about so that people can feel safe when they do get a bed . |

Brilliant idea but it won't work because there are way too many landlords in the dail ! |

"Receivers have already moved to the courts for an eviction order big money doesn't have any humanity
True but this has the potential of momentum like the water charges"
While I agree with most of what's been said and am sickened by the homeless issue and very proud of Glen Hansard and others for what they are doing, the water charges thing bugs me.
I'm not on mains. It costs me 3k to drill well and install water purification system, which I pay at least 200e a year to maintain with salt and other stuff. Everyone kicks off about water charges of 150e a year unless you use more but nobody is on the street about increased VAT or USC, which take a lot more out of everyone's pockets! Please realise which battles are worth fighting for people. |

"It's a stupid idea but an important message, its private property and the owners have their rights "
Private property that may be but it's been sat empty for 6 years while people are literally dying on the streets.
Had to laugh at RTE 6.01 tonight. Some asshole saying they were worried about the health and safety of the building. As opposed to the health and safety of the streets?? |

Squatting was a big thing in the 70s 80s maybe it should just go back to that...bit dubious about millionaire tax exempt artists being front and centre, guitar and new album in hand |

I'm involved with s particular trade union the aims and hope of this excersise was 2 fold short term yes to just get people off the street over Xmas. Yes it's symbolic yes it's only a sticking plaster yes it can be seen as grandstanding but if it gets 50-70 people off the streets it's so worth it the 2nd aim was obviously long term expose the hypocrisy and double standards regarding the banks their dealings and relationships re Nama You , me as a taxpayer have every right to se where your money has gone and I for one have no issue seeing these state owned assets being used for the greater good It's only a short term fix it hadn't solved anything except to give some people a warm bed n good over this hardest of periods |

While I can see the humanity of this action I think the judge today made a mistake letting these people occupy a building illegally, he has now set a precedent for people to occupy any property in the name of humanity rather than granting an order against the health authority's to house these people in suitable accommodation which suits their needs.
Before u all get up on ur white horses there are people there with complex problems that need more than a roof a bed and food some need help with other issues they are dealing with, others just need a space to gather them selves together till they are able to turn their fortunes around
If the order was made against the authorities responsible for caring for those amongst us less fortunate then I believe the money and impetus would be found to sort this on a longer term basis than a week and a half
Remember there are empty beds in hostels tonight but a lot won't use these due to lack of security abuse from other users, theft being housed with people with addiction issues.
I'd rather see a building turned into a proper one stop shop where people will be treated with dignity where they can get help with the issues they face and moved on to a more pernamant resolution
I know that doesn't happen overnight but I am sure there's an army barracks that could be pressed in to service with little effort or time to resolve this issue on a temporary basis until a proper place can be found
Remember u have to want help to receive help u have to take responsibility to want to improve ur suitation,I know there's tones of sub issues amongst the main issue but if u choose to live on the street than u deserve to be left there.
If u fell on hard times and just need the time and space to gather yourself but are willing and able to help urself then u should receive the assistance to do that sticking people in hotels is not the answer it only adds to the problem.
This is not an urban problem but a country wide problem there for I think it should be dealt with on a national scale like our roads the NRA took them over we now have the backbone of a road network to be proud of trough public private partnerships. In my humble opinion I think this framework could also work in the provision of affordable housing where a decent standard of housing could be achieved and run trough a national housing policy rather than the piecemeal job now being done by our councils |

Why occupy Apollo while we have enough shelters to accommodate the homeless ??
I work in the homeless service myself and for the past 6 weeks we have had 40 ensuite rooms empty.
Am am typing this now we have only 2 rooms occupied.
Why ? Because there are rules - fair rules- no drugs, no alcohol, in by a certain hour for the safety of all using the service. Fact is that doesn't suit many of them hence they choose to remain on the streets |

There are photos going around Facebook of shelters which appears to be just multiple blankets on the floor of one room.
No dignity or privacy there. |

I doubt the ppl running Apollo house are letting ppl use drink and drugs there, even if just not for the bad publicity. |

I'm guessing Eisr isn't letting them use drugs where he works either half... people will find a way and that's the sad truth, you cannot police everyone 24/7 |

I could tell stories of some of the shelters both in the city and in dun laoghaire. Drugs... drink...fights and more.. people wont use shelters due to those issues..others wont use them as they are high or d*unk when getting to the door.. others get to the door not d*unk or high but after the shut off time and cant get in or dont have the fee for the bed. Thats the other thing they have to pay for their bed for the night which is actually fair enough. |
