Hope this isn't hijacking the thread,

Got me thinking do they guys that organise M&G wish more people would take the initiative to organise them, that way there could be more, in more varied locations etc etc

I think you'll find they do. The main issue is people asking to go and then just not showing or bothering to tell the organiser they aren't going. It's a nightmare. You will to deal with people bitching about others, thousands of men messaging, people looking for this that and the other... And I don't blame people for not organising them.

I always thought meet and greets could work better when done in a flash mob style choose a pub and let a few people know and post a forum thread on the day sift through the responses/mails and invite the verified or genuine seeming people.

Not much in the way of bullshit and if someone has a problem with someone they can avoid them or leave.

Last meet and greet I attended was kinda in this vein and was a laid back evening.
