100% agree. Name and shame these irresponsible and selfish idiots. Civil responsibility isn't a good enough reason to not drink and drive - maybe naming them publically will cop them on. |

I think as it's a black and white finding then yes, it's such a stupid thing to do and people should be ashamed, it may even act as a deterant.
Although I would imagine after the initial nosiness dies down that a lot of people wouldn't bother with the names that are published. Like a modern day Stubbs gazette, used to be a huge stigma attached to being published in that and now no one cares anymore |

In theory - yes.
However if I read on Twitter that someone 200 miles away has been done for DD, I have no idea who they are. All the locals will know the person without it having to be twittered. |

I've never driven my car with so much as half a drink taken. I make sure I've a way getting there and back so I don't have to worry about driving. I won't even get back in my car until the following evening and mostly I wouldn't bother driving the next day.
Where I live drink driving is rampant and 5 people from my town have been killed drink driving in the past 2 years. The only good thing about it is the didn't hurt anyone else.
Absolutely name and shame. But as loncav says we'll already know about it before that's done. And tbh most don't care that they've been caught as it's the done thing. All they care about is that they'll lose their licence. |

As has been done.
I don't see why this crime, as opposed to so many others, should be singled out for "naming and shaming".

When you have know someone who has lost a loved one, due to someone selfishness too drink and driving .... I think naming and shaming is the right thing to do..... and if it stops others or maybe one person that potentially saves a innocent persons life. |

Any driver caught drink driving should get a life time ban
Also there should be severe penalties for excess speeding
Way way way too many people and families destroyed by both acts |

Not defending drink driving, simply pointing out that there are other careless drivers who put themselves and others at risk. And why would you shame and name one group and not another? Not a fan of naming and shaming it does no good but fuelling gossip. |

Absolutely not
In the case of drink driving I agree but out of principle it is a shit idea, I HATE twitter shaming of any sort. There is an established legal process for punishing drink driver. The idea only serves local busy bodies and their gossip.
It's the default mode of the feminazi and it is the primary source of post truth misinformation. This effect works both ways and is why trump is now in power.
Idiots getting their facts wrong on a of misunderstanding and then letting that grain gather momentum among the gullible who take it is as fact as it propagates.
Look at YouTube comments and you see the mental attitudes people develop. |

Well the idea is that in a couple years there will be no steering wheel and you just put in your destination and the car drives you there.
On the one hand its going to put a lot of people out of jobs, but on the other it will reduce road deaths almost completely, will allow people who want to go out for a drink have a safe way home and let older people maintain their independence for longer. |

How many do you reckon youll see on the roads of Ireland at approx 390k a pop and another 2k to have the autopilot activated? Even with the autopilot activated, Tesla tells you to comply with your hands on the wheel at all times and be ready to take over the car at any time. We re not ready for them yet as theres so many disputes going on and regulations to be put in place surrounding them. They dont recognise country roads or unmarked streets like housing estates, so in effect, the driver ends up driving the car anyway. Its not going to get rid of the d*unk drivers on our roads anytime soon, im sad to say |

Its not quite there yet, but I think we'll have a (relatively) affordable range of self driving cars on the road in thebnext 5 years. Teslas going for incremental improvements while Googles going for full self driving or nothing. Its not as close as we'd like but its a lot closer than most realise. |

Agree, applying logic to an irrational thought process doesn't work.
Gossip mongering only hurt's the people attached and why should they be further punished.
All stupid driving (drink, speed, distracted) is punished through due process but not severely enough in my opinion |

Yes, do you?
I have a full licence, am driving over 20 year's, never had point's or an accident and am a careful driver. I have driven here and in various places across Europe.
We can all make silly mistakes but certain ones that increase risk of harm to yourself and other road users is a different matter.
I think a lot of court sentences don't fit the crime or deter other's for that matter. |

I don't agree. I have not read the thread but i dont think i need to. We have laws and a court system. They are flawed. But they are better than the alternative. There is a reason punishments have a set period of time. Because if you set no time limit then the punishment goes on forever. That has a serious effect on people. If the punishment doesn't end why would you behave??
I have seen a fatal car crash. There was no phone or alcohol involved. He just drove into a stream of traffic. i have seen sober drivers nearly cause accidents. I have seen tired drivers forget to turn the steering wheel. Should these not also be named and shamed? Why only on twitter? There is only a fraction of the population on that. Broadcast the names on the radio news and 6 one on rte one... page 3 of the herald. Really get the shame out there. Let's get these people kicked out of their jobs. Banned from civil society for life.
So how long should the shame last?
What if someone does it twice? Should the shame be more intense? Maybe pelt them with eggs. Really rub it in. If they do it three times brand them. Burn it into their skin.
We could roll it out for other things too. Name and shame cheaters, repeat offenders could be stoned until they learn their lesson. Shop lifters get named and shamed. Repeat offenders lose a hand maybe? Obviously that's extreme. We should wait til they offend at least 4 times before that.
Seriously tho, How many people would need to kill themselves from the bullying before we stop? And imagine the outrage when that happens. People turning on fellow outragers because they supported this thing that caused these people to die. |

"You made the point much better than I could but maybe went a bit Hollywood towards the end! "
sadly it's not Hollywood. Individuals are generally good moral people. If you gather them into a crowd however their own morals get subverted to the groups morals. The group usually ends up being led by the extremes. One angry person, using reason, can turn a group of good people into an angry mob. Or a determined mod. The mob gets a little endorphin rush from "doing the right thing" but that high doesn't last and it gets harder to find. So over time you have to go a little bit more extreme, just a smidge, to get your high. Those smidges add up over time. Soon the original purpose isn't what you are doing now. It's not morals that keeps you in the mob it's fear.
Last year a 14 yr old girl was stoned to death by her brother after she "allowed" herself to be gang raped and then shamed her family even more by reporting on it. 34 people were arrested eventually for the gang rape. No one was found guilty. But that is Afghanistan. Not us.
My mum was shunned because she wouldn't take her husband back after he left her. Yes he was a dangerous alcoholic who abused her, but she was wrong and they were right. That was only in the 80s. It still goes on in small parishes to this day.
History is littered with extreme people who turn rational people into dangerous groups. The nazi party, the french revolution, the easter rising, trump and of course, the internet. It's a slippery slope and in my humble opinion, it's one we should avoid |

The process is already underway in the UK.
Mob rule? That sounds like a violent mind, I'd be thinking if everyone they knew expressed their disappointment to the driver they may take notice. Vigilantes are no heroes most times. |

I think the point here is that essentially at the time you blow a positive sample twice on a calibrated machine, you're done. There is no reason why you were driving with alcohol in your system so the judge, although necessary is almost redundant as there is no defence. The UK police obviously feel confident enough to do so. I was wondering how it would go down here. (Positively I think now) |
