The superstition of throwing salt over your shoulder as far as I recall was if you spilt salt, you had to throw a pinch over your left shoulder to ward off the bad luck that would follow spilling salt!

Loads of these superstitions don't make sense today as they have become so far removed from the original intention but I never walk under a ladder

13 is an "unlucky number" hence the 131 number plates on cars and if you were a Knights Templar 13 was very bloody unlucky, BUT to a China man 13 is lucky...

So if 13 is really a unlucky number, is there really even such thing as luck??(just having a Confucius moment here )

I say I'm not superstitious but I still find myself doing the ones I know, I'm so bad I actually inherite other people's superstitions. Plus there is a whole load asiosiated with sea farers, and I love the history behind them too

Never put New shoes on the table.

Never cross someone on the stairs.

Never hand someone a knife.

Never leave the house through a different door than the one you came in through.

Bless yourself by dipping your finger in that little thingy at the front door with the wee drop of holy water in it, (at your Granny's house) if you had to come back because you've forgotten something (I worked with a Russian girl, who said that in Russian they have that same superstition but instead of blessing yourself, you have to look at yourself in a mirror and smile)

Sailing superstitions, the ones I can remember

Women onboard a boat is bad luck unless she is naked. (That's why you always saw a bear breast woman on the bowsprit (the front) of those early sail boats

Bad luck to whistle on board (cause your calling the wind/storms)

Flowers are bad luck on board (cause they'll be used in your wreath at your funeral

Bad luck to step on a boat with your left foot

Bad luck to cut your hair or nails at sea, your making an offering to a Greek god (can't remember which one) while in Neptune's domain, he doesn't like that

Cats are good luck on board a boat,

Salt features alot in paganism too, it's used to ward off bad spirits/energy.

I have a head of useless information. Very handy to have for a table quiz

Left side of the nose being itchy was someone shredding you to pieces and right side being itchy meant being spoken highly of.

Left hand being itchy meant money coming your way and right meant money leaving! Don't get it being the opposite sides for different body part's....wonder what the fab version would be

I would consider myself a free thinker, and believe that my opinions should be based on logic and evidence rather than authorities and traditions. Now, I don't believe, for a moment, Jesus of Nazareth was the son of God and all that jazz but that said, he was a real person, he did have 12 dudes who followed him around, rode into Jerusalem on a donkey, everyone thought he was the ballox, then got arrested in some garden by the Jews and crusafied by the Romans . So I'd be inclined to think he did probably eat dinner before he went for a little stroll in the garden, and his mates were probably there and all, now Judah's may or may not of spilled the salt. It's just a rumor, but what I've heard was, Judah's was a pretty clumsy fella, always spilling his a cola in Mcdonalds, so I don't think it's to far of a stretch

I'm very superistious I mean that on day of a football match I have to iron my y fronts the jocks I wear to match and jocks for after match and the y fronts I wear during the match. I sit in certain place in dressing room. At start of match I kick each goal post twice for luck and before a penalty kick never let one in yet.

Have to get up on left side of bed in mornings

Don't like to see black cats

Won't drive a red coloured car

Never purchase anything electrical until it's Friday except Friday 13th
