Plug the laptop into a screen or TV. Maybe it works but the screen is dead

It depends on exactly what happens here. Is the screen not turning on at all but the laptop sounds like its starting? Then it could be the screen.

If you're getting any text at the start then theres a different issue. It could easily be resolved by resetting windows with a usb key (if its a windows laptop and not a mac).

It could be windows, it could be the screen, it could be a problem with booting up and it could be the harddrive has failed. Have you had any errors in the past few weeks?

I had this problem for a while, it's called the black screen of death or something similarly dramatic. I did a system restore to a point in the past (a month previous) before any system updates etc as that is what messed it up for me. I'd to try many days to restore too until I found one that worked for me. If you do a cntrl alt delete then system restore should be an option.

Or press the little start button and when the box comes up - type system restore in it

Blue screen of death - much more serious

Ah this is common enough actually. Just turn the laptop off using the power button. Even if it's off right now, turn it on and turn it off using the power button again.

Then wait 30 seconds.

remove the battery for 5 mins. Put battery back in.

Charge the laptop for 30 mins before turning it on.

Once turning it on it will work as normal. If not, fuse is blown in it or port damaged

Loving some of these answers. Go & see an i.t. guy/girl. If it keeps starting with a blank screen you can try interrupting the start up with one of the f keys/del/esc to access the BIOS.

Screen is black so that screen won't appear. Sounds like the port

Which port? The screen is black because the OS won't load.

Port for charger. Not sending enough power. It's the most common problem with laptops. I worked with them. Or else the fuse has blown. If it was due to OS not loading she'd be able to see windows icon immediately after turning it on.

Dunboyne & Dublin

You need to tell us if removal/replacement of battery and power on/of as advised above made any difference. Also the connecting to a separate monitor to see if you can see it on that. Then we may be able to offer further advice.

Some of the lads here resolving problems without knowing exactly whats happening lol. Gotta love it. Yhere was a guy in here few months ago whose machine would not power on, i told him to drop by my place with the laptop and an external hard drive or usb stick and i would whip out the hard drive, connect it to my machine and transfer his pics and documents etc.. he xould not bring to an I.T. store as he was a TV and sidnt want people to know. I'm in I.T and would have no problem doing the same here if the girl wanted help.
