They said they were. The were from Ulster and spoke Gaelic similar to Scottish and Donegal Gaelic.
Ulster was the most depopulated area in the whole of Ireland at the time, that was one of the reasons for us going there. From Argyll you can see Rathin wth binoculars. They were merely you home.

Mainly poverty and economic reasons. The connections between Ulster and Scotland go back thousands of years predating the vikings who are also a significant part of the local DNA along with the British who were invited into Ireland around 1000 years ago to defend against the Vikings but already were here. The links across UK Ireland Scandinavia and Europe have always existed back to a time when the UK was joined to mainland Europe by a land bridge now under the North Sea.
That sort of combined history shows we have more in common than that which divides us!
